The ECM Synchronika Espresso Machine is ECM's flagship dual boiler espresso machine. In every model that ECM (and their sister company, Profitec) makes, the pursuit of excellence is clear. For the Synchronika, we love the combination of German design and Italian heritage.

Why the love at first sight? ECM has applied subtle beautification and refinement of the little things that set apart the offerings in this equipment class. This machine offers exceptional espresso performance and steam power in a package that would look and feel perfect in the design-conscious home, office or restaurant, and its clean internal layout means we’ll be able to help you learn about maintaining the machine at home (if you want).

We believe the Synchronika now rounds out the very top end of the dual boiler prosumer class. The internals of dual boiler machines are very similar, rendering the buying decision for most people a question of aesthetic preferences. When reviewing the Synchronika, we felt it was only fair to include a few details about the Pro 700 and Lucca M58 as well. So, here we go...

The ECM Synchronika offers the best of race car heritage. If you love vintage Italian race cars, you’ll appreciate the iconic gauge with large numbers and a red dial. The brushed metal PID display downplays the digital aspect of this machine, accentuating the dual gauges on the top front of the machine.

The Profitec Pro 700 tends towards a rational, minimalist form that is ideal for the modern, refined kitchen or office. If you appreciate a clean aesthetic, where less is more, this machine is for you.

The LUCCA M58 by Quick Mill presents sleek, Italian-nautical design language details, like a deep navy blue PID display with matching blue and white analog gauges, formed side panels with venting, and chrome cup rails that seat perfectly in optional wood side panels. Picture the finest sailing vessels in the Mediterranean.

Now, for some buyers, the internal details impact the buying decision as much (if not more) than the aesthetic considerations.

The Synchronika builds on the strengths of their sister company Profitec’s well-proven Pro 700, with:

  • Large 2-liter steam boiler, responsive 0.75-liter brew boiler, both in stainless steel
  • Clean internal wiring and plumbing layout
  • Integrated PID with shot timer offering adjustable temperature control of both boilers
  • Quiet rotary pump
  • Built-in water reservoir with easy plumbing option
  • Timeless e61 brew group

Front and center is ECM’s patented update of the most iconic group head design on the market, which now utilizes stainless steel internals and a simpler single top cap. The reason for implementing more stainless steel parts is their durability, cleanliness, and ability to resist calcium buildup for simpler maintenance routine.

The eyes are next drawn to a pair of new stainless steel joysticks with insulated “no-burn” wands, which make steam and hot water dispensing instant on and off. These spring-loaded joysticks swivel on a ball joint for easy locking at any point on the rotation, and the steam power can be fine-tuned for different steaming preferences by adjusting the steam boiler using the PID controller.

Next, take in the stunning custom brew and steam pressures gauges. The big block letters and red needle evoke the feel of interacting with a hand-made timepiece or a classic European sports car. The updated PID with chrome finish adds new functionality without sacrificing aesthetics. The Synchronika displays the temperatures of the steam and brew boilers and has a built in-shot timer to improve shot consistency. The PID’s brushed metal finish combined with the new ability to easily turn the display off means the technology doesn’t have to distract from the timeless looks.

It also has the option to turn on an adjustable group cleaning reminder, which could be helpful for building the habit of backflushing your machine after 10, 20, 30 drinks, etc. We know some people have questions about why and how to adjust the brewing temperature, as well as the accuracy of the temperature shown on their machine. Rest assured that all of our Italian-made dual boiler machines retain control of brew temperature as well as offset. This means we can always make sure your machine is brewing at the correct temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius, and help you fine-tune your machine for different coffees.

With a capable espresso grinder, the Synchronika can create an espresso experience that rivals your favorite coffee shop. Whether you love traditional Italian-style espresso or the more subtle and nuanced specialty cafe, this has the flexibility and consistency to excel.
