In The Press
In 1969, La Spaziale of Bologna, Italy, created a patented espresso system that warmed water with steam rather than boiling. The brand continues to innovate. Its new compact machine is made exclusively for Clive Coffee in Portland, Ore., and functions like a commercial model, with stainless-steel filters and a dual-boiler system.
Nothing beats a great shot of espresso or a sweet and delicious latte from the comfort of your own home, so we set out to find the perfect home espresso setup. After testing and experiment with a wide variety of expensive and inexpensive espresso machines, grinders, and accessories, we were head over heels about the LUCCA A53.
The La Spaziale Vivaldi II (S1) is one of the most popular and well proven dual boilers on the market. Our customers have appreciated the solid build quality and generous steam power. Our founder Mark traveled to Bologna to work with La Spaziale to develop a few customizations to the Vivaldi, specifically designed for our customers. The LUCCA A53 is the result of this collaboration.
The LUCCA mark shines through the control panel’s modern matte finish and the matching matte drip tray contrasts with the gloss black La Spaziale badge. The back of the machine is all stainless, which makes a fantastic contrast to the wood side panels that we make here in Portland. If you’d like a beautiful set of wood panels, they need to be installed by our technicians in Portland.
There are a number of the reasons for this machine’s reputation and continued popularity. Forgiving dual boiler performance with great steam power and modern saturated style brew boiler (more efficient, so it warms up and reheats faster than e61 machines). Deeper 53mm portafilters (double spout and bottomless are included) hold as much coffee as their 58mm alternatives, but the thicker coffee puck is more forgiving of channeling.
True commercial DNA means maximum durability and easy access to parts for service. Simple and intuitive design makes it less intimidating and easier to learn than some machines. You can pull shots manually, or program the shot volume. There is a front loading three liter water reservoir.
The machine is easily switchable between 15 and 20 amp modes, meaning you can use the machine on any outlet. If you have 20 amp circuit breakers available, the machine can heat both boilers simultaneously. This cuts warmup time to 15 minutes, and improves steam regeneration for bigger volumes and back to back drinks. If you’re looking for a beautiful, durable and powerful espresso machine, it’s hard to do better than the LUCCA A53 Mini.

Dedicated temperature controlled boilers for brewing and steaming means both functions can happen simultaneously, with the additional advantage of fine tunability. Sour and bitter espresso flavors can be minimized by raising or lowering brew temperature, resulting in a smoother shot. Adjusting the temperature of the steam boiler can increase or decrease the amount of steam power to suit different drink size milk drinks.
Vibratory pumps are the most common design in compact espresso machines, because they’re durable, compact and economical. Although they’re a bit louder than rotary pumps, when adjusted to proper 9 bar brew pressure vibratory pumps offer comparable espresso quality.
Digital Temperature Control
Closed loop temperature control is a very simple and reliable means of maintaining boiler temperature. Brew temperature and steam boiler temperature can be adjusted degree by degree.
Volumetric programming gives the option of precisely dispensing a desired amount of liquid with the push of a button. For example, the double shot button can be programmed for a double shot, and the single shot button can be programmed for a 1oz rinsing flush.
