Anbessa showcases everything extraordinary about Ethiopian coffee from the Hambela region of Guji. Roasted by Portland's Coava Coffee Roasters, this lot comes from producers working with the Goro washing station at altitudes where coffee develops slowly, deliberately, and with exceptional complexity. Available in both drip and espresso roast profiles, Anbessa adapts beautifully to how you prefer to brew.
Tasting Notes
Expect juicy pomegranate brightness up front, transitioning through delicate rosé wine florals in the mid-palate, and finishing with smooth dark chocolate richness. The body is silky and medium-weight, with a wine-like acidity that never overwhelms. The finish lingers with fruit-forward sweetness that invites another sip. This is Ethiopian coffee at its most expressive—clean, vibrant, and layered.
Brew Methods
The drip roast shines in pour over methods (V60, Chemex, Kalita) where the floral and fruit notes can fully express themselves, and performs equally well in drip machines and French press. The espresso roast was developed specifically for milk drinks and straight shots, where the chocolate becomes more pronounced while maintaining that signature pomegranate brightness. Both profiles work beautifully in AeroPress.
About Hambela Guji
The Hambela area sits at some of Ethiopia's highest coffee-growing altitudes, where young, healthy plants and extended 40-day drying periods create ideal conditions for flavor development. Producers here work with 3 to 15 hectares—significantly larger than the Ethiopian average—which allows for more consistent quality control and better farmer training. The Goro washing station supports these farmers with processing expertise that preserves the coffee's inherent complexity.
