Awesome product that allows consistent shots! The integrated scale simplicity is awesome, I can swap between my bottomless, double, or single shot portafilters and the auto tare feature makes using this grinder the bomb. The grinds come out nice and fluffy, pretty evenly distributed in the portafilter. I have not seen any clumping or inconsistent grinds."

Need to Know

The Baratza Sette 270Wi is a grind-by-weight espresso grinder that takes the guesswork out of dosing — automatically weighing each dose to within 0.3 grams so every shot starts exactly where you want it. At $599.95, it sits in a sweet spot that's hard to beat: genuinely advanced grind-by-weight technology, near-zero retention, and a macro/micro adjustment system that gives you surgical control over your espresso. Whether you're a home barista pulling your first shots or someone deep into single-origin espresso who switches coffees frequently, the 270Wi is designed to disappear into your workflow and let the coffee speak for itself.

Key Features

  • Integrated grind-by-weight dosing: A built-in scale targets your programmed dose to within 0.3g, eliminating the need for a separate portafilter scale and manual weighing between shots
  • 40mm conical steel burrs with vertical grinding path: Purpose-built for espresso, this design minimizes retention so what goes in comes out — critical for clean coffee swaps and accurate dosing
  • Macro/micro adjustment: 31 stepped macro settings combined with a continuously adjustable micro ring give you infinite fine-tuning within each step — enough resolution to dial in any espresso
  • Three programmable weight presets: Save dose targets for different coffees or recipes and recall them with one button press
  • 3.5 grams per second grind speed: Noticeably faster than most espresso grinders in this price range, keeping your morning routine tight
  • Near-zero retention: The straight-through vertical burr path means less than a gram of coffee stays in the grinder — you're not dosing yesterday's stale grounds into today's shot
  • Compact vertical footprint: Tall and narrow rather than wide, so it fits on crowded countertops without demanding prime real estate
  • Front-mounted controls: Adjustment collar and dosing buttons are all within easy reach — no shuffling the grinder around to make changes

Ideal For

The Sette 270Wi is ideal for home baristas at any skill level who want to tighten their espresso workflow without adding complexity. If you're newer to espresso, the grind-by-weight system removes one of the most frustrating variables from dialing in — you'll get a consistent dose every time without manually weighing and adjusting. If you're experienced, you'll appreciate the speed, the near-zero retention for single dosing, and the precise macro/micro adjustment range that lets you make meaningful changes without overshooting. It's especially well-suited for anyone who rotates between coffees regularly: minimal retention and programmable presets make switching fast and clean. And if counter space is tight, the compact vertical design fits where wider grinders can't. This is the best espresso grinder under $600 for people who want a tool that just works — quietly, accurately, and without demanding constant attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reviews

Customers praised the grinder's fast speed, consistent fluffy grinds, and built-in scale for precise dosing. "Extremely good value" for the price. However, some noted it's loud (86db), can be messy, and a few experienced reliability issues with the control panel or motor failing early. Shims may be needed for fine espresso grinding.

So far it's doing its job! Once I installed the shims, everything was working out.

Really enjoying this grinder. It

Really enjoying this grinder. It does indeed sound louder than my other grinders, I measured it as approx. 86db. The grind time is pretty quick though, typically less than 7 seconds for 20g basket. Very happy with this grinder, it's my second Baratza.

I had to install one

I had to install one shim (provided with purchase) for it to grind fine enough for espresso. The grind to weight option makes it extremely user friendly. I don't single dose, so having a hopper with an easy push button (you can switch between 3 presets) is perfect. As mentioned in other reviews, it's a little loud (difficult to hold a conversation while grinding), but it grinds very quickly and shuts off. For the price point, it's an extremely good value!

Would not recommend

Features were good, but motor stopped functioning after only two weeks use. Tried troubleshooting per vendor product docs and Clive support, but for now its just modern sculpture.

A long time Baratza user but does not measure up

Very touchy on control screen, wasting lots of beautiful coffee grounds. Sometimes pulses , sometimes measures grinds accurately. I never know How it will respond to desired weight. Going back to my more reliable forte. Not recommended unless theY can do better with control panel. Giving mine away. Grinds are fine but touch screen is terrible.

Lusting for one for months

Lusting for one for months I pulled the trigger and wish I had sooner. Consistency of one variable - weight - lets me tweek temp and the micro grind for each roast to perfection.

Works well

Works well. Grind appears consistent and fluffy, but I have not directly analyzed individual granule sizes.

I have not seen any clumping or inconsistent grinds. I have seen some static depending on the type of beans and no amount of RDT can solve it, but that would happen on many grinders. Some beans no static what so ever, others keep holding the electricity no matter the waiting to see if it dissipates. The two minor nits are that it is louder, but it grinds so fast it doesn't bother me. And that it occasionally holds some grinds, but even when it does, what is in the portafilter is still within 0.1-0.2 grams of the set weight. These grounds just fall out if I bump the grinder and then I notice it, but it is a small amount. So far I am very pleased with the 270Wi, it does what it said it would when I was researching and automatically adjusts the grinder time for the proper dosing amount, so after changing beans, this is about 2-3 grinds later and it is all set again. I am finding that I need to grind on settings between 3 and 7 depending on the beans in order to get the proper grind size for the 20-30sec extraction. My espresso maker is volumetric dosing, so that variable is removed. My tamp is a 30lb clicker, so this variable is removed as well.

Cheap electric components

Great at first, 10 days later and 2.2 Lavazza E Creme it stopped working. The lights are still on, the hopper securely in place, the adjustment hasn’t moved from 9e. Push the start and nothing. Either the switch on the hopper engagement or the switch on the adjustment knob went bad. $549 is way to much for this grinder to not work. Plastic junk!

Great for medium roast espresso

I have had this for about 3 weeks now, had Clive Coffee do the initial dial in for me to save time and beans. It was dialed in for the Bag of roasted coffee in the starter kit. Enjoyed the beans, adjusted the grinder a couple of steps finer for best results. I only prepare espresso drinks, so didn’t need a grinder that was capable of doing grinds for pour over or French press. I had read that the conical burrs do fine for medium roast beans, but not so much for darker roasts. This was fine for me, as i mostly do Italian medium roasts for espresso.

It is a bit noisy, but not much more than the cunill flat burr grinder that it replaces. It produces a fluffy grind with no clumping. There is very little retention, less than .15 grams from what i could tell using the cheep kitchen scale i have. It is a little messy, but i have 53mm portafilter for my La Spaziale, 5mm smaller that a e61. I have ordered the drop down portafilter holder, and the extended portafilter hook to see if excess grounds spilled can be improved.

I was initially thinking that this grinder would get me through until i could afford a more significant quality grinder. But after using it for these 3 weeks, i am quite satisfied, and don’t think i will need to upgrade to a higher performance grinder in the future.

I also ordered from Baratza a hopper extender so i can fit at least a pound of beans in the hopper. I will try to update review after evaluating those upgrades.

The noise of success

It took a bit longer for me to set it up as I did not precisely follow the guidance. The grinder does not produce clumps and the grounds are very consistent and fluffy. They fall into the portafilter just perfectly with very little mess. The scales have been great. Overall a great grinder. Worth it. Yes, it's a bit noisy.

Absolutely pleased with it!

It just so wonderful to have it grind it just as much in weight as it pleases me. It’s actually fantastic!!!
