"Easy to use, has an adjustable timer or manual option. I like the manual option. The grinder is impressive, very fast and able to grind extremely fine. This is an excellent entry level grinder, you get a solid grinder with nice options. It has a stopper as well so you can clear the grinder without letting more beans in which is nice for a fresh grind in the morning."

Need to Know

The Baratza Sette 30 AP is a dedicated espresso grinder built around the same 40mm conical steel burrs found in Baratza's higher-end Sette 270. For home baristas entering the world of espresso on a budget, it delivers professional-grade particle consistency without the professional price tag. At under $300, this is one of the most capable entry-level grinders you can buy — and one of the few that doesn't ask you to compromise on the fundamentals.

The Sette 30 uses a vertical burr orientation and direct drive motor, meaning coffee passes straight through the burrs into your portafilter with minimal retention. It's one of the best single-dosing grinders at this price point. Toss in 18 grams, get 18 grams out. No stale grounds lingering in chambers. No waste. Just fresh coffee, shot after shot.

Key Features

  • 40mm conical steel burrs — the same burr set used in the Sette 270, delivering espresso-grade particle distribution
  • 30 stepped grind settings — macro adjustment optimized for the espresso range
  • Digital timed dosing — programmable by-weight dosing with three presets
  • Low retention design — vertical burr path and direct drive motor minimize stale grounds
  • Tool-free burr access — two twists and the entire burr assembly is out for cleaning
  • Compact footprint — fits comfortably on small counters without sacrificing grind quality
  • Grounds bin included — 5.5oz capacity for batch grinding or portafilter-free operation

What to Expect

The Sette 30 has more plastic components than its higher-end sibling, the Sette 270. The adjustment ring is stepped rather than stepless. The hopper is utilitarian. But the burrs? The burrs are the same. And in espresso, the burrs are what matter. This grinder will produce cafe-quality shots in your kitchen for years if you treat it right — and Clive's team will show you how.

Cleaning is simple. Two twists and the burr chamber is completely accessible. No screws, no tools, no frustration. Pop the burrs out, brush away the chaff, reassemble. Five minutes, once a month, and you're done.

Ideal For

Home baristas who want serious espresso grinding without the $500+ price tag. Those who value low retention and easy cleaning. Anyone working with a compact kitchen setup. Beginners who are ready to learn dialing in properly and want a grinder that will grow with them as their palate develops. If you're pulling 2-4 shots a day and want equipment that respects the craft without demanding a second mortgage, this is it.

Attractive design, easy to use,

Attractive design, easy to use, great results. Straight through flow of ground coffee through the burrs is great, making for easy cleaning. The machine is LOUD and that is only reason I've not given it a higher rating. It's not a huge issue if you're just grinding for an espresso shot, but it's nearly unbearable if grinding for pour overs or something. Maybe the noise is a function of the burr design?

Hey Alan! The reason the Sette is louder than other grinders is that the burrs and motor are right at the front of the machine. Though this makes noise more apparent, it also makes for little to no grind retention. We are glad that, overall, you're happy with the purchase!

Consistent grind

Grind after grind consistently made. Loud when in use but only for the max of 10 seconds each use. This has offered a different experience to pour over, aero press and espresso.

Looked promising, but motor did

Looked promising, but motor did not start. The reason for my poor review assessment of two stars is that Clive Coffee customer service could not be reached by phone (at all). Only option was email, which was answered by someone who never responded to what I actually described or asked for. Instead, s/he (the Clive service agent) took the easiest way to do no work and get rid of me: First (email), send me to videos (though I had already told him/her that I had checked those out). Second (email), tell me to go to Baratza. Third (email), ok, you can send it back to us. — which I will do. Why is Clive even a reseller??? Baratza should just sell these directly online, best would be via Amazon, so that the shipping back is smooth.

Easy to use.

I find swapping between roast’s a breeze. Easy to adjust between brew types and roast types. As a small batch roaster we us a lot of coffee and this grinder has kept the grind quality consistency perfectly. Only down is it doesn’t save the last setting after power is lost for the time setting but using a dry erase works to track the times.

Fine grind with ease. Easy

Fine grind with ease. Easy Straight Thru load with no clog I like, since I do individual bean load to allow variety as opposed to full hopper. But, I must say it really is loud. Very happy overall.

Unique design, grinds a double in a flash, easy to dial in,

I received this grinder as a second, 'backup grinder' for decaf beans, an adjunct to our ECM V-Titan 64 grinder. Both grinders feed our ECM Synchronika.

It seems Baratza has made a bit of a mess of things through miscommunication about the Sette grinder lineup. Originally intended to be sold as a grinder for pour-over and other brewed coffee, their promotional material and user manual says you will have to shim the burrs of the Sette 30 if you want to get a fine grind for espresso. Don't believe it. Out of the box, and based on what the Baratza promotional materials implied, I started grinding at "7" out of the 30 settings on the adjustment ring and a light tamp. I may as well have been using a blind portafilter - zero flow through the puck. I then took a leap of faith and went straight to "15" - and that, after a pound of beans, and plus or minus one or two 'clicks,' seems to be the sweet spot for espresso, depending on the roast and ambient conditions.

As it turns out, there are two Sette burr sets - the "AP" set, which grinds plenty fine but is not very good for coarser grinds; and the "BG" set for coarser grinds, from filtered 'pourover' brewing to French press. All of the Sette models now come with the AP burrs stock. The burrs are only $25 a set, and the unique design of the Sette allows you to remove and replace the burrs without tools and in no time flat, by simply unscrewing the adjustment ring, popping one set of burrs out of and the other set back into the ring, and then screwing the ring back on after the swap. If you're going to do a lot of 'brewed' coffee, get the BG burrs.

For espresso, using the AP burrs, I can pull a 20 gram dose, 1:2.5 'normale' with the Sette 30 adjusted smack in the middle at 15 out of 30 'steps.' I cannot imagine that I will ever have to "shim" my burrs in order to get a fine espresso grind with the adjustment set to "1," as the manual suggests. The manual no doubt assumes the grinder has the BG burrs mounted - per the original marketing plan - not the AP burrs that are now standard.

Confused? Thank the Baratza marketing folks for that one.

Let's get this out of the way up front - this grinder is LOUD. That is a result of the design, which has the drive motor perpendicular to and behind the burrs, which are right inside the adjustment ring and just above the grounds outlet. If you want quiet, this ain't your grinder, so just don't bother. If you're using it for evening decaf shots, as I am, you won't have to worry about waking up the rest of the house at 5 a.m. The advantage of the design is virtually zero grounds retention - you go from beans in the hopper, straight down through the spinning burrs and into your portafilter or tub - with no twists and turns and places for grounds to accumulate.

This grinder pumps out a 20 gram double shot dose in about 5 to 6 seconds, which is a marvel given the tiny 40 mm burrs. The grind is consistent and fluffy - so fluffy, in fact, that you will want to grind into the 'tub' provided with the Sette rather than into your portafilter - your grounds will quickly overflow if you dispense directly into the portafilter. I tap the tub on the counter a few times to settle the grounds, then pour or spoon them into my filter basket. It takes a few extra seconds, and unless you're working under pressure in a commercial setting, who cares? You would never buy this grinder for commercial purposes anyway - in fact, Baratza recommends letting it rest for 45 to 60 seconds after you grind a double shot before you start grinding again. The motor otherwise will run hot and likely will not last long.

If you read the Clive customer reviews of the Sette 270 and the 270W, you will see many complaints about the functioning (or malfunctioning) of the various buzzers and bells on those more expensive models, like the built in acaia scale in the 270W, which doubles the price of the 270W versus the base model 30. All of the Sette grinders have the same burr set, motor and grinding ability, so the simple answer is... don't buy the buzzers and bells, buy the basic Sette 30 grinder. You wouldn't let the car dealer sell you the $750 'miracle undercoating' for your new Honda Civic, now would you?

If you want to weigh your shots, use a scale. If you find that the 30 stepped settings on the Sette 30 do not give you enough fine control over the grind, you can even purchase the "microadjustment ring" that comes on the Sette 270/270W models and mount it on the Sette 30 - which then breaks each of the 30 'macro settings' down into 9 'micro' settings - hence the "Sette 270" moniker. The total cost to upgrade the model 30 to the 270 settings configuration is still less than the Sette 270 out of the box, quite a bit less if you hunt down a discount parts source for the add-on "microadjustment ring."

So bottom line - for $249, the Sette 30 is a uniquely designed, very efficient grinder. It has limitations and idiosyncracies, but if you accommodate its quirks, ...
