Sourced from the volcanic highlands of Bener Meriah in Sumatra's Aceh district, this USDA Organic coffee is a textbook example of what makes Indonesian coffee so distinctive. Roasted by Portland's Centri Coffee and imported through Royal Coffee in Oakland, it comes from the KSU Gayo Mandiri cooperative—1,218 family farms cultivating coffee at 1,200–1,350 meters using traditional wet-hulling methods that have defined Sumatran coffee for generations.
Wet-hulling, or giling basah, strips the coffee of its protective parchment layer while still wet, then dries the exposed bean in the tropical sun. The result? A flavor profile as bold as it is complex: earthy, herbaceous, sometimes almost savory, with a syrupy body that coats the palate. This particular lot stands out because beneath that classic Sumatran earthiness lies a surprising dark fruit sweetness—figs, black currant, and cocoa powder that emerges as the cup cools.
Tasting Notes
Expect a rich, intense cup with layers of fig and black currant up front, transitioning to cocoa powder and earthy undertones of cedar and tobacco. The body is full and velvety, with low acidity and a long, warming finish. This coffee rewards patience—let it cool slightly and the fruit notes bloom.
Brew Methods
Roasted a shade darker than Centri's other single origins, this Sumatra shines in immersion methods. French press brings out its syrupy body and earthy depth, while Clever dripper or AeroPress balances the intensity with clarity. It also pulls a bold, low-acid espresso for those who prefer darker roast profiles in milk drinks. Avoid ultra-light pour-over methods—this coffee wants contact time to express itself fully.
About the Roaster
Centri Coffee roasts in small batches in Portland, focusing on approachable profiles that honor each coffee's origin character without over-roasting.
