Need to Know

The ECM Mechanika Slim PID is a compact heat exchanger espresso machine that refuses to compromise on performance. Built in ECM's Heidelberg factory, it packs a 2.2-liter stainless steel boiler, an iconic E61 group head, and integrated PID temperature control into a footprint that fits comfortably on counters where full-size machines simply can't. For intermediate home baristas who want commercial-grade steam power, more temperature options than traditional E61 machines, and the tactile ritual of lever-operated espresso, all under $2,200.

Key Features

  • 2.2L Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Boiler: Delivers simultaneous brewing and steaming at 1.6 bar of steam pressure, enough for back-to-back cappuccinos without recovery time
  • PID Temperature Control with Shot Timer: Real-time monitoring lets you track boiler temperature and extraction time for repeatable results
  • Three-Position Brew Temperature Switch: Adjust group head temperature across a 194°F–210°F range to match light roasts, dark roasts, or anything in between
  • Automatic Pre-Infusion: Low-pressure saturation of the coffee puck before full pump pressure engages, reducing channeling and promoting even extraction
  • E61 Group Head: A proven, time-tested design that maintains thermal stability shot after shot
  • Vibratory Pump: Quiet and reliable operation
  • Compact Footprint: Full heat exchanger capability in a slim chassis designed for kitchens where counter space is at a premium

Ideal For

The ECM Mechanika Slim PID is built for the intermediate home barista who has outgrown entry-level equipment and wants real control over temperature, pre-infusion, and steam power, without stepping up to a dual boiler they may not need. It's ideal for households making multiple milk-based drinks daily: weekday lattes for two, weekend brunch cappuccinos, after-dinner cortados for guests. The 1.6-bar steam pressure keeps pace with demand, and the heat exchanger design means you never have to wait between brewing and steaming. . If you want your morning espresso to feel like craft, not convenience, the Mechanika Slim PID was made for you.

The ECM Mechanika V Slim

The ECM Mechanika V Slim is a beautiful machine, that produces good espresso consistently. It’s also a joy to use. The lever is fun (coming from a Rancilio Silvia) and the steam/water knobs turn like butter. It also has a larger drip tray, water reservoir, and heft that all improve the user experience. Oh and the on-demand steam is awesome, no waiting ever. Sure the cost is 2X+ my old machine but the consistency, joy to use and aesthetics make it all worth it. I’d recommend this machine to anyone in the HX market. If I had to nit, the pressure gauge wasn’t flush to the machine and needed tightening.

We are happy to hear about your experience, Ronald! Thanks for the review!

ECM Mechanika V Slim

The ECM Mechanika V Slim is my First Espresso machine. I own a Nespresso machine but was looking for a more hands on approach. To be able to try different beans freshly ground every morning. What a huge difference and hands down the coffee flavor is so much more flavorful. For a month or more I watched many YouTube videos before purchasing. I’m glad I went big instead of entry level. This is a beautiful Espresso Machine, well made, easy to use. Makes the best tasting coffee. I told my husband I am so spoiled now. The steaming I’m still works on, no latte art for me, but really great coffee, I make 2 cups every morning, sometimes more. I make my husband an Americano, mine is a couple of Coffee Breve my favorite. The most beautiful machine in my really old kitchen. Best decision ever. I will keep learning what other things I can do.

The ECM is Such a Great Experience!

I’ve had this beautiful German made & Italian designed machine for about a month and have used it about 10 times. So far, everything works perfectly and my friends say it looks like a work of art. The Latte/coffee drinks I’ve made have been fantastic pretty much every time. Absolutely Love it! There’s definitely a learning curve, as this is my first semi-automatic espresso machine. I would definitely recommend this machine.

I upgraded to the ECM

I upgraded to the ECM Mechanika Slim PID after a brief, unhappy experience with another heat exchanger machine. The ECM behaves exactly as expected! It’s more thermally stable that my old Profitec Pro 300 of may years and it makes a great Cappucino, steams big pitchers for lattes and generates all the hot water needed or Americanos. It’s perfect for my needs. If you aren’t constantly experimenting with different coffees, this is all the machine you need.

Superb Performance, lavish style, compact!

I actually bought this machine after using a more expensive machine that I bought from Clive, the La Spaziale Lucca Mini. It got damaged severely during a shipping incident and so I needed a replacement. I ended up going with this machine because it had all the features and at a competitive pricepoint (though I know these machines are costing us tariff inflation; but thats another topic for a different website). The Mechanika Slim PID is freaking awesome! The craftsmanship is better than my Spaziale or former Breville. Its built like a tank, but also modern feeling. It took me about an hour to get the shots dialed in and I am using the single portafilter. The portafilters alone are beyond what you get on most machines, and even the tamper is decent. So expect the machine to come with almost everything you need, except a grinder and scale. The pre-infusion is a must and easy to turn on and off. Theres three temperature settings for brew temp, but I just use the middle setting. I never used all the brew temp settings my Lucca Mini anyway, so I find this machine to have enough adjustability with having 3 preset brew temps.

The machine heats up fast, and its quieter than my other machines. The footprint is very narrow, but it is deep so its important to account for the dimensions of the machine. I dont mind the wands needing to sit "outside the footprint" when in use, because I can just fold them back in when Im not using it. It even came with a freaking dust cover which is a nice little touch.

I feel like this is the BMW of espresso machines. Its well designed and efficient, and the overall experience is top notch. The water capacity is good, and the machine doesn't splash water or espresso everywhere like my other two did. They've all made a mess, and I find the adjustability of the steam pressure to be superb. The steam pressure is high if you need it to be high, or low/medium if you need to tweak your foam a bit at the end or beginning of frothing.

I also find the cup warmer to warm up faster than my other machines, and heat the cups better, but you will have to remove the cups to open the lid for water refills, and of course it has a low water warning which is great, but you do have to keep mental tabs on how much is in there. Its not going to have externally visible water levels like a breville, and with my la spaziale I could just pull out the water rest drawer without removing anything. This is just the nuance of a super compact machine.

One thing I will note. . . is that the visual appear of the external grouphead machines makes them look like works of art, but that external metal grouphead gets hot af. Even HOURS after you turn the machine off it can still burn your hand. If you have kids or pets that climb on counters (like cats), this is something you do need to take note of safety wise.

I give this machine 5 starts off the bat. Reliability wise, I hope it keeps me happy!

This a great choice if

This a great choice if you have limited counter space. The 4 second pre-infusion feature provides a rich and balanced shot. Easy to use with built in shot timer. Vibratory pump better than expected. Typical high quality from ECM.

Great machine

Very solid build and not too large a footprint. Looks beautiful and is easy to clean. For best use, preheat for 15+ min. Do not turn off the machine in between cups of espresso. I have it on all morning and then again all evening.

I love it.

It took me a long time to feel comfortable with the price tag of HX and E61 type machines, but once I upgraded from my Rancillio Silvia v3 to the ECM Mechanika V Slim I immediately saw the value and realized that the cumbersome workflow of a single boiler machine had me pretty unenthused about making espresso at home.. I went from looking for an excuse to skip the temp surfing and just go to a coffee shop to making multiple drinks daily with this machine.

The Mechanika specifically is beautiful from afar and up close. It's small footprint is perfect in our tight kitchen and the water tank and drip tray still have generous capacity. The knobs and levers have great mechanical feedback while still feeling smooth. Hot water and a microfiber cloth keep all the mirror finish stainless clean and clear with minimal effort. Steaming and brewing are excellent and very consistent. With this and a Niche Zero grinder, I feel like the coffee and my technique are no longer secondary to the equipment quirks and limitations. Making espresso and milk drinks at home is nothing like it was with my first setup (it got me started though!)

The compact form factor has a couple ergonomic drawbacks. You have to be sure the steam wand is pointing well within the drip tray to keep a condensation purge from wetting your counter. I don't use the hot water spigot much at all, and it feels a bit in the way - it's either sticking outside the footprint of the machine, or turned over the drip tray but interfering with the brew lever. While it's not ergonomic perfection, I doubt any of these style machines are.

The minor drawbacks really don't compare to how great this machine is overall, especially for the price and size. Ask me how my ECM machine is and I will tell you 5/5 stars, without hesitation. If this fits your budget, go for it!

Looks are great as expected

Looks are great as expected ... solid outlook ... shiny exterior ...produces great steam. It usually warms up with in 10 mins before I pull a shot of espresso . Pulling up back to back espresso shots has not been a problem .I pulled a maximum of 4 at one stretch .. I believe taste is as good as the beans one chooses ...Having said that three important things needed for a great espresso shot 1. Good Beans 2.good Grinder 3. Good Espresso machine ...all need to align ...

LOVE the machine overall. Beautiful,

LOVE the machine overall. Beautiful, slim, especially love the foaming! But less than one month in, the steam gauge developed some kind of leak. Clive Coffee was great and responsive and sent a part that ended up not being helpful. The entire gauge needs to be replaced with a part coming from Germany! Not sure when it will arrive. Still using the machine and making great coffee drinks.

Spectacular

I moved up to this machine after owning a breville barista express for about 8 months. I thought I had perfected my technique on that and was doing well. I was not sure I was going to do much better with this machine. My first two shots with the ECM were astoundingly better. The foam I make with the steam wand is spot on. I did not imagine the degree of improvement I would get with this. It’s far exceeded my expectations. And it looks great. The folks at Clive were incredibly helpful over the phone as I made up my mind about what machine to get. The grinder I was advised to get, the Eureka Mignon, is equally awesome. All in all I can confidently say that I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. And I know my technique is gradually improving so I expect even better results Over the next few months. Great machine. Compact size, classic looks , spectacular extraction.

Prameet, we are so thrilled to know you love your new Mechanika! Thanks so much for leaving a review, and please let us know how the shots are tasting!

Great purchase!

I love the Mechanika V Slim! It looks great, it's simple to use, and it's built like a very sexy tank.

For my first espresso machine, I wanted a machine that provides a really good hands on experience for my morning ritual. I didn't need the extra features of a dual boiler (plummable, pre-infusion, pid, led displays, etc). I wanted something more solid than an entry level machine. I also wanted a low profile.

Enter the ECM Mechanika V Slim. This machine has everything I need, and nothing I don't. It's easy to work with, it pulls great shots, and the milk froth is quite smooth for latte art. The temperatures are consistent with a cooling flush before pulling a shot. And about that cooling flush: it's not a big deal at all, and after some experience now, I would probably perform a flush with a dual boiler with pid anyway, just to clear the brew group.

After 6 months, I'm very happy with the purchase. I'd recommend this machine and Clive without question.

Wonderful

This was a significant chunk of change, and I wasn't sure it was really going to be worth it over my trusty reliable Silvia that I had used for years. It absolutely has been. It's very well made and cranks out consistent shots. I love not having to wait for the steamer. A really nice surprise is that I have found it much easier to clean than the Silvia. Perhaps because it is so pretty, I want to keep it cleaner.

Amazing Stability

26 years making espresso but this is my first HX. Loving the temperature control! Boiler came set at 1.25 bar which after 15 minutes and an 8 oz. flush produces 153F espresso in a preheated cup shot after shot. Beautiful consistency and great steam power. This machine would have saved me years of struggle in the past (before the internet and YouTube). Enjoy it for the looks, love it for the quality. Couldn’t be happier.

Beautiful

What a beautiful, well built, and powerful machine. The footprint on my counter is perfect for a small apartment, but the small nature of the machine does not affect its ability to pull shot after shot, with plenty of steam power. ECM's quality is top notch and every time I grab a portafilter, that is immediately apparent. I'm excited for the years to come, using this machine.
