Need to Know

The Profitec Pro 500 PID is a heat exchanger espresso machine built for the home barista who's tired of choosing between shot quality and milk steam. It delivers both, without compromise. With a 2-liter steam boiler, a thermally stable E61 group head, and a PID controller hidden behind the drip tray, this machine pulls consistent shots and steams milk fast enough to serve a houseful of cappuccinos before the conversation gets cold. At $1,999, it's the most capable heat-exchanger espresso machine under $2,000.

Key Features

  • Heat Exchanger Design: A 2-liter steam boiler keeps brew water at the perfect extraction temperature while delivering serious steam power for milk drinks
  • PID Temperature Control: Set your brew temperature digitally and hold it within a degree, critical for light roasts or temperature-sensitive espresso
  • E61 Group Head: Proven design that keeps your shots temperature stable back to back
  • Vibratory Pump: Profitec's quietest vibratory pump to date: smooth, reliable, and surprisingly unobtrusive
  • Internal Reservoir: 2-liter water tank built into the chassis for a clean countertop footprint
  • No-Burn Steam Wand: Cool-touch steam arm so you're not dodging hot metal when milk jugs are flying

Ideal For

The Profitec Pro 500 PID is built for the intermediate home barista who's outgrown a single boiler and wants to make multiple milk drinks quickly without sacrificing shot quality. If your morning routine involves two 16-ounce lattes and you're tired of waiting for a boiler to recover, this is the machine. It's also ideal for the espresso enthusiast who wants the thermal stability of an E61 group and the precision of PID control without spending north of three thousand dollars. This is not a beginner's first machine — it assumes you know how to dial in a grinder and manage a cooling flush — but for someone ready to step up from a single boiler, the Pro 500 delivers heat exchanger performance at an honest price.

Our first edition Quick Mill

Our first edition Quick Mill Andrea finally died. The estimated cost was robbery. So we went without for two years. We are thrilled with our new machine. We are Latte people so this machine came highly recommended. Yes!! I really like this machine.

This beautiful machine is an

This beautiful machine is an incredible investment! My wife and I went from spending over $12 a day on espresso drinks to less than $3 a day. If you’re a coffee snob wanting to upgrade to a real espresso machine, not an “appliance” that will probably break on you within the first year, we highly recommend investing in this baby. The machine itself is really easy to use, but it takes some experimenting to get your grind right (we got the Eureka Mignon Specialita grinder and LOVE IT). The machine is also easy to keep clean, we just make sure to backflush the group head a few times after we pull our morning shots. Oh, we also recommend adding a bottomless portafilter to your order, as this was a game changer for learning how to pull consistent and delicious shots. The downside is that this machine doesn’t come with one, so make sure to get one if you’re new to the hobby. Clive has also been extremely helpful with their informative emails and how to guides!

Great Machine

Bought this machine a month ago after struggling with the Rocket Apartmento which broke down 4 times over 6 years with major repairs.

The Profitec Pro 500 is a much better machine the PID works great and once you dial in your grinder this thing is terrific. No need to keep measuring or weighing your coffee unless you change your coffee.

I would highly recommend the Profitec 500

Broke down in six months

I purchased this machine less than a year ago. Very loud noise when steaming and now the machine started making rattling sounds. I reached out to customer service and worked with them on trouble shooting the potential repair issues. I was finally led to: looks like you have a leak which could've been a manufacturer leak. They then asked me pull this machine apart to look for a leak. I cant figure out how to work a touch scale how am I supposed to pull this machine panel apart. So the only two other options are either to pay to ship this very heavy machine back for warranty or pay a local coffee machine expert to fix it. Well this was a bad way of spending $2k with zero product support.

Profitec 500 PID

We have had our Profitec for 3 weeks now and are thrilled with the purchase! It takes a short while to get all the variables calibrated as we are transitioning from a Delonghi Magnifica, but that is really a user issue as we become familiar with the Profitec and Baratza grinder. I was quite happy with the old machine but it STB and an upgrade was needed. Amazing how espresso from the same beans used with the Magnifica taste so much better with the Profitec. The Clive people have been superb with their phone support and web tutorials.

Super Happy with Pro-500-PID / ECM-S-Automatik

I'm delighted with the Pro500PID, paired with ECM S-Automatik-64 grinder. After 12 years with Silvia & Rocky I was longing to upgrade and Profitec/ECM offered a sweet-spot of features, esthetics, and value that I couldn't resist. An HX-design perfectly fits my home-use pattern (3-6 capps a day), and superb German build-quality, applied to iconic Italian style that sits happily in a 20"x24"x24" nook of counter space (HxWxD including grinder), simply nails it. You know you're happy with a buy like this when you enjoy a little twinge of visceral pleasure every time you look at it or use it!

Classy machine

I bought this machine in Aug 2018 after tossing up between Rocket, Quick Mill and Bezzera. I went with it after reading glowing reviews. I waited a while to write this review so that I can see how the machine performed. In short it has been spectacular. The machine produces great coffee, especially if you have fresh beans. Really simple to use and keeps the temperature very consistent thanks to the PID. It has some nice features on the outside and makes a statement in your kitchen. I am really impressed on the inside. It is built very cleanly and not the spaghetti mess we can get with some machines. Good machine all in all and good value! I would buy Profitec brand again.

As advertised

Disclaimer: I have the machine only a month, so I have no information on its durability. Having said that, I upgraded to this machine after having the Silvia for 7 years. The quality of coffee coming out of the E61 head is noticeably better. The steam is powerful and dry, and the machine is beautiful on the countertop. One of the nice features of the machine is that it is not very tall and fits nicely under the cabinet. As other reviewers said, the pump is very quiet. All in all I expected a great machine and that's what I got.

It is a great machine, even for a beginner

Have been trying to get my hand on one of these machines, after some research and locked in for the Profitec 500. It has been one month and I must say that this is a great decision so far. It took a short time to get up to speed. And it is really not difficult to come up with great taste expresso and latte. So highly recommended.

Pro 500 Some troubleshooting required...

Let me start by saying Clive has been absolutely great throughout this, and I would buy from them again without hesitation. I received my machine, got it set up, and discovered the brew gauge was not working. Gave Clive a call and got a suggestion to use the blind basket to verify it really was not working - and no, it didn't work. Got connected with the support folks, and went through several variations on verifying the gauge didn't work. Clive shipped me a replacement gauge without a problem. I got that one installed and still no working gauge! We finally tracked the problem to a blocked capillary tube (the thing that connects to the back of the brew gauge). I got that removed and unplugged - and now have a functional machine! Gauge works. Apparently these things happen, and I was "lucky" enough to have it happen to me. I have a much greater understanding of the inside of the machine, and have learned a lot about the mechanics inside the shiny box. Ben, Paul, Victoria, and Ryan were great to work with. Helpful, patient, and truly seemed to want to help. Oh, by the way, the espresso it brews is excellent! Far better than the Gaggia Classic it replaced. And yes, steaming milk while brewing is a nice change from the Classic.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the review! We're always happy to help.

Love it!

I have patiently waited for my Sylvia to die and when it did I bought the profitec 500 paired with a eureka grinder. I’m in coffee heaven. I can’t wait to get up in the am to have my coffee . It’s consistently good when I dial in my beans and it makes great microfoam. I may be able to get to doing some minor latte art ! I have not looked back on this purchase and there is not a single aspect of the machine that makes me want for something more . It’s gorgeous on the counter . I have it on a timer so it is heated up when I get up . I also appreciated the great help I had in making a decision from Clive which is why I ultimately bought from them. Written by a Happy camper for sure

Awesome coffee machine. Went back

Awesome coffee machine. Went back and forth between countless models from the entry to prosumer price range and I am so happy I spent the extra bucks up front. It is so quick to use. After preheating I can grind and have a shot ready in about 2 minutes.

So happy you landed on the Pro 500 and are loving it as much as we do! Thanks for the review, Christopher!

Love it

I purchased this machine based on a recommendation from an associate from Clive coffee, and what I can say is that is awesome. I was entertaining 20 guests a few weeks ago and i was able to create every drink they requested with no issue what so ever. This thing is a tank it never depreciates in pressure and it always pulls a great shot. While the cost was on the higher side for me, I have no regrets its great and works like a charm. I case I didn't say it clear enough I highly recommend this machine, and highly recommend that you work with Clive Coffee their service is great.

Excellent

I had a Quick Mill Silvano. Great machine, worked for 5 years, but costs of third repair put me off, leading to purchase of Profitec 500 PID. 1) If you're trying to compare Profitec to other similar machines, I would say save the time and purchase the Profitec 500. I compared for days, read reviews, etc. The competition is by ECM, which turns out, is very similar to this machine, and slightly more costly. 2) E61 rules. It's night and day difference between this and non-E61 like the Quick Mill Silvano that I had. Shots are actually EASIER to pull, a lot less work goes into adjusting parameters. Every single shot comes out great as long the grind and dose are proper. I couldn't believe how much less coffee I waste between shots. Results are very consistent shot to shot. Beans I couldn't pull properly before are now pulling without effort. It's kind of amazing! 3) Machine is quiet. Not sure how much more quiet a Rotary pump would be, but this is very quiet (unlike Quick Mill Silvano which was loud). I wouldn't get a Rotary pump for the sake of quietness. If you need the machine plumbed, that's a different story. 4) Steaming wand works great. Steaming capability is a lot better than the smaller Quick Mill Silvano. 5) Cosmetically, the machine is absolutely great-looking. 6) Ordering from Clive Coffee was effortless. Fast, secure shipping. I applaud them for their periodic emails sent before and after machine delivery. Even for someone who's used to using espresso machines, I found them helpful and properly timed. They seem to be running a nice business. Hopefully when it comes to service, they'd deliver too.

My 7 year old Breville

My 7 year old Breville machine died, so I decided to replace it with a more capable mode. I purchased the Profitec PD 500 after comparing it to the rest of the field in the heat exchanger machine category. It's beautifully constructed, and simple to use. The frothing wand is powerful, and I'm still trying to perfect the micro foam, but it's getting better.

Congratulations, Paul! What a fantastic upgrade!
