"We love the simplicity of our Silvias - plural because we bought 2 - our 5 year old went to our beach cabin and now we’re currently enjoying the brand new Silvia espresso machine at home. It’s so simple guests can’t fail to brew an excellent espresso. The fact it brews and froths milk only is no doubt why the Rancilio Silvia is so dependable. We love the simplicity of no grinders and no gauges."

Need to Know

The Rancilio Silvia is the espresso machine that refuses to go out of style. For over two decades, this single-boiler workhorse has quietly earned its reputation as one of the most reliable machines in home espresso. It's not flashy. It's not trying to be. What it is: a no-nonsense, semi-automatic espresso machine with a saturated group head, vibratory pump, and a 2-liter internal reservoir. At $995, it's one of the most accessible ways to start pulling real shots at home without compromising on build quality or longevity.

The Silvia doesn't pretend to be a commercial machine. It's built for the home barista who wants consistent espresso in the morning, maybe another shot in the afternoon, and doesn't need to steam milk for a crowd. If you're ready to learn the fundamentals of espresso without breaking the bank or overwhelming your counter space, this is where you start.

Key Features

  • Single boiler design: brew or steam, one at a time. You'll wait 30-60 seconds between pulling a shot and steaming milk, but that's the tradeoff for simplicity and price.
  • Saturated group head: the brass group stays in constant contact with boiler water, stabilizing temperature, and improving shot consistency.
  • Commercial-grade portafilter: 58mm, the industry standard. You're learning on the same size basket pros use.
  • Vibratory pump: reliable, quiet enough for home use, and easy to service if needed.
  • Reservoir-fed water supply: no plumbing required. Fill the 2L tank, and you're ready to brew.

Ideal For

The Silvia is built for the beginner home barista. If you're drinking one or two espresso drinks a day, solo or with a partner, and you want something simple, reliable, and repairable, this is your machine. It's not for entertaining large groups or back-to-back milk drinks. It's for the person who wants to learn the craft without spending $2,000+ on their first setup. Limited counter space? The Silvia's compact footprint won't dominate your kitchen. You're getting a machine with a two-decade track record, a global service network, and a passionate community of home users who've been modding, tweaking, and perfecting shots on this platform since the early 2000s.

If you want fancy bells and whistles, look elsewhere. If you want a machine that will still be pulling shots a decade from now, and a team of coffee experts to help you get there, the Rancilio Silvia from Clive is a great place to start.

This is my second Rancilio

This is my second Rancilio Silvia. My first one lasted 16 years. Simple, single boiler, no frills espresso machine made with quality components at an attractive price point. Makes great espresso shots and powerful steam to froth milk.

Having never been a barista

Having never been a barista there was definitely a learning curve. I would have given this a five star rating but I don’t like the long wait between the coffee pour to steaming the milk. Cleanup is easy and so far it seems like a well built machine.

Clive Coffee has some very helpful videos that eased the brewing experience.

I upgraded from a very

I upgraded from a very simple/cheap home espresso appliance. While the Silvia has no frills, she’s built like a tank and I hope to have her for many years to come. I researched and planned for a long time before buying this machine, and I’ve been quite pleased with the way Clive does business. I didn’t love the extremely long ship time, but I understand things are moving slowly with COVID. I’ve found the Silvia very straightforward to use, and certainly understand why so many say it takes some learning to get a handle on how to operate her. The steam pressure is phenomenal, and creates wonderful foam when I use the right techniques. For me the only drawback this far has been the water reservoir—making two to four lattes in a day cranks through water and I find myself refilling it often. Build quality is exceptional! I think as long as you know the nuances of a single boiler machine, you can make great espresso pretty easily, and the temperature surfing method has been working well for my daily lattes.

Rancilio Silvia barista beginner..

I am quite new to wanna make cafe level espresso at home :) with my new Rancilio Silvia. I a super happy with the look of this machine on my bench. Its solid and quality made is shouting from body to porta filter to buttons. I still practice my technique in making drinkable espresso shots and Clive Coffee and its people (Hannah in particular) have been more than kind and insanely fast responsive to my questions - Kudos to this team.

Compact, Classy, Simple, Solid

This machine fits perfectly on our small counter space. We haven't used an espresso machine before and this has been very easy for us to learn on. The Steam wand is powerful and the shots come out clean and flavorful. The look of the machine is simple and classy and doesn't crowd our small kitchen space. It's a classic machine and does a good job.

Miss Silvia is a Beautiful Machine

My husband bought Miss Silvia for me for my birthday. She is replacing an old Saeco that I've had for many years. The machine is beautiful to look at and appears well made. I find the controls intuitive and the machine easy to use. I hope the machine will be as durable as it looks. So far, the boiler heats up quickly enough for my habits and the steam works well. When I pay attention, I get beautiful, creamy milk for my morning lattes. I played around with grind, and cleaned and adjusted my coffee grinder in an effort to get nicer shots, but at this point, the biggest improvement has come from getting a heavy metal tamper. I suspect that I need a finer grind than my old cuisinart grinder is capable of to take my espresso to the next level. However, overall, I am happy with Miss Silvia!

Best Value

5 - 4 star ratings and 13 - 5 star ratings. Nothing below a four. That right there should tell you something. I've had mine now for 14 years. It still works great! If and when my machine quits working. I'll buy the same one.

Can't argue with this, Dean. We'll be ready for you.

Love Miss Silvia!

I had a small kitchen fire and had to replace my "old" Silvia (which I had for years, and was still working fine). The new Miss Silvia (gotta love these names!) is even better. I don't like the insignia on the handle (feels weird against my palm) but the frother is terrific--it has a much larger range of motion, and I can really make my crema exactly the way I like it. I expect the new model to last me as many, if not more, years as the previous one.

Love Clive and our Rancilio Silvia

Our family has owned several expensive espresso makers over the years and even in coffee-centric Portland they have been almost impossible to repair and maintain. Then we found Clive coffee. We specifically wanted machines that could be repaired locally. After listening to our needs and giving us taste tests, they directed us to the Rancilio Silvia and Baratza burr grinder. No hard sell, it was their most modestly priced machine. The Clive staff taught us to use it on the spot and gave me another tutorial a week later when I stopped in. After 6 years of daily use we just replaced a gear on the grinder, by ourselves (and we are NOT particularly handy). The part was less than $10 and our grinder runs like a champ again. The Silvia has needed no attention other than some fairly infrequent descaling. Clive offers classes, loaner grinders, and terrific on-line tutorials for everything. They also can repair what they sell...in-house...nobody does that anymore in this era of built in obsolescence. The only thing that would make me like Clive more is if they had some parking.

Do not buy from Clive Coffee! Worst Customer Service Ever!

The 1 star is for Clive Coffee not the Rancilio. I am not happy that the machine malfunctioned after less than a month of use, but extremely disappointed with the lack of response from Clive Coffee. Fortunately for me Rancilio stood behind their product and stepped up to honor their warranty that was suppose to be honored by Clive. see service/delivery field for more on poor service at Clive Coffee. Do not buy from Clive Coffee unless you want the worst customer service ever.

a real workhorse

I've had my Silvia for 15 years and it has never failed me. The original steam wand failed recently, but I had planned to replace anyway as the newer machines feature an improved design. It took 15 minutes to replace the old one. As others have said, it is not a machine for someone who isn't willing to invest some time and energy in learning its quirks. A very good grinder is required - otherwise you will have spent a significant chunk of change for nothing. However, with a good grinder and some experimentation, you can make some delicious espresso. Given that my Silvia is making great espresso after 15 years, I think it is safe to say that I made great purchase.

Couldn't be happier

I am not a coffee snob, but this is my 6th espresso machine in 22 continuous years of owning an espresso machine. It is very simple to use and maintain. I make two double lattes every morning and the whole process takes 15 min or less from turning on the machine to shutting it off. If I left it on overnight or had it on a timer, I could probably do it in under 10 minutes because it would already be near temperature.

Great micro foam, and the coffee is the best of any machine I've had.

It feels like it's built like a tank and the I really appreciate that it can be serviced. My other 5 machines were an evolution in more features and better quality, but none were that service-able.

It took a couple weeks of experimenting and a couple calls to Clive Coffee to get the best results. Plus, I had to get a 400 dollar grinder to get these results, However, now my coffees are better than most commercial lattes and certainly as good as the best I can get in my NE Portland neighborhood.

For the money, it is a great machine for home personal use.

If there is a negative, it's that this is a small single boiler machine. Fine for the two lattes I make in the morning. It would be fine for 4 or 5 rapid fire espressos. But if you are looking at making 4, 5, or even 10 after dinner cappucinos for a dinner party (as I read one reviewer doing with a much more expensive double boiler machine) , I think this machine would show it's weakness as a single boiler machine having to steam that much milk and would be too slow for this. It will impress any of your friends with the quality of drink you can make, just not too many of them at one time.

Best Bang for the Buck

I like having hot water available for making tea after I've had my first couple of cups of coffee. Makes as good a coffee/espresso as any I have tasted.
Wish the cappuccino were hotter so I didn't feel compelled to drink it so fast.

Fantastic Home Espresso Machine

I love the machine, it takes a while to warm up properly, but then makes wonderful espresso. The steamer is incredible and the best I have seen in a home machine. Yes I would recommend and buy again.

I
Italo-americano
Italian espresso for an Italian immigran

As an Italian "spoiled" immigrant, I've bben really picky about the espresso I had in the U.S.
I have to say, this machine does the trick: smell, consistency, crema, flavor are very much like any espresso you can have at a bar in Italy.
It makes me think of home.....
As many other said, it takes a while to find the perfect combination roast, grind, tamp. My wife and I needed 6 tries before finding the initial combination and we are still improving, although in the last week I was never disappointed.
Frothing is not that easy either because the wand releases such a powerful steam that the first couple times I sprayed milk all over the counter. I'm getting there and my cappuccini (not cappucinos) are getting better and better.
Cleaning is easy, but you have to pamper this machine with constant care before and after the shot.
I love the filter lock system: I can pound the portafilter on anything and just the coffee puck will fall off.
Quick hint if you use a Gaggia MDF grinder: select a setting between 4 and 7; I am on 4 right now and it's great.
Cons: shallow tray (you would need a small container when you clean the machine if you don't want messy overflows) and poor quakity tamp. I suggest buying a 58 mm tamp in metal.

Best intro to home espresso, best value

The Silvia is, as we say at Clive Coffee, the best introduction to home espresso. It's the first machine that we recommend in terms of price and quality and the only espresso machine under $1,000 that we carry for good reason. The commercial grade portafilter feels sturdy in your hand, the 41-watt pump provides adequate pressure and the solid brass boiler heats efficiently up to brewing temperature. Switching into steam mode heats the boiler up for foaming milk in a matter of minutes and provides unbelievable steam pressure and capacity considering the relatively small .35 liter boiler.

Because the Silvia is a single boiler machine, it is necessary to steam milk and brew coffee separately and it takes some practice to get the rhythm down. The biggest downside to the Silvia is the tiny and shallow drip-tray. You'll definitely want to keep an eye on it as it fills up quickly and is difficult to handle when it's full.

The Silvia is the best espresso machine in its class and if you're looking for an espresso machine under a thousand dollars the Silvia is truly the only one worth considering.

still learning

I'm still learning how to use this. It's definitely not a decent cup right out of the box like the breville that i had. but it's worth continuing to refine skills in making good espresso and i think i'm getting there. still working on the steaming milk part. i've had some good experiences and some where i just scalded the milk.
