Need to Know

The ECM Synchronika II is the benchmark against which all E61 espresso machines are measured. This is a dual-boiler, rotary-pump masterpiece with an integrated PID controller, shot timer, and switchable water supply that performs as beautifully as it looks. With a 6.5-minute heat-up time in fast mode, it outpaces nearly every E61 competitor. What sets the Synchronika II apart is its thoughtful engineering: every adjustment lives in a single intuitive OLED menu, controlled by a tactile decoder knob. Pre-infusion profiles, brew temperatures, and auto on/off schedules are all accessible without opening the machine or memorizing button combinations.

This is an espresso machine built for the long haul. ECM's attention to detail is obsessive: chrome joystick steam wands, hefty ergonomic portafilters, a mirrored finish on the inside of the drip tray. Even the internals earn high marks from Clive's tech team for clean layout and serviceability. The Synchronika II doesn't just look the part; it's engineered to pull exceptional shots and steam commercial-quality milk for decades.

Key Features

  • Dual boiler system: Independent brew and steam boilers for simultaneous extraction and milk steaming with zero thermal compromise
  • E61 group head: The electronic heating element in the group head helps the machine heat up from a cold start much faster than most E61 machines.
  • Rotary pump: Quieter operation, more consistent pressure, and plumb-in capability
  • Integrated PID with OLED display: Precise temperature control for both boilers with easy menu navigation
  • Shot timer: PID doubles as a shot timer for shot accuracy
  • Switchable water supply: Run on the internal reservoir or plumb directly to your water line
  • Fast heat-up mode: Ready to pull shots in 6.5 minutes, significantly faster than traditional E61 machines
  • Programmable pre-infusion: Customize your pre-infusion duration and pressure ramp for lighter roasts or experimental brewing
  • 2-bar steam pressure: Commercial-speed milk texturing, even when steaming for large gatherings
  • Joystick steam and hot water controls: Intuitive, tactile, and built to last

Ideal For

The Synchronika II is built for the serious home barista who values longevity, performance, and flexibility. If you're starting your espresso journey and want to skip the upgrade treadmill, this is an end-game machine that will grow with your skills. If you're an experienced enthusiast looking for a workhorse that handles everything from single-origin straight espresso to back-to-back cappuccinos at a dinner party, the Synchronika II delivers. It's equally at home pulling a single shot each morning as it is steaming milk for 5+ lattes on a Saturday afternoon.

It's ideal for anyone who wants commercial-grade steam performance without compromising on espresso quality, and for those who appreciate the mechanical ritual of an E61 lever and the reliability of German engineering. Pair it with a capable espresso grinder, and you'll pull shots that rival your favorite specialty cafe, at a fraction of the cost per cup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reviews

Customers praised this dual-boiler machine for exceptional build quality, consistent shots, and powerful steam. Many noted it's "built like a tank" with German craftsmanship. However, several reported reliability issues including pump failures, steam pressure inconsistencies, and parts coming loose within months, raising concerns about quality control at this price point.

  • Perfect shots and built like an old Volvo! Solid, heavy and built for use!
  • The ECM II is so advanced that it can humble the home barista initially.
  • With the very first sip my wife asked in an amazed voice 'is this the same coffee?'

I have never owned an

I have never owned an espresso machine. After talking to 3 online vendors, i chose Hannah at Clive. She built probably 10 different quotes as i changed my mind for months. Absolutely love the fit and finish of the ecm synchronika! Dual boilers and dual gauges help me to know when to start the morning. Reservoir is super easy to fill even if glasses in the warmer. The joysticks are fantastic. I make a cortado and americano every day. Purchased the bottomless portafilter with my points. Love it. Everything is so well made and is absolutely beautiful to look at.

Thanks, Kevin! So glad you are happy with your purchase and your experience!

I've used this machine daily

I've used this machine daily for little over four years and it's a true workhorse. Just had issues w/leaking brew boiler due to my own ignorance and had no issue trading out for new one. Be sure and research the water you're using, I made the mistake of using distilled water which is basically acid to the stainless steel boiler. Preferably something w/PH of 7+.

This machine is incredible and

This machine is incredible and I appreciate Clive's pre-shipment inspection/setup. It produces consistent shots once you're dialed in, which as you know changes daily. After one month of using the reservoir, I had the machine plumbed in with a different filtration system than offered at Clive's. A directly plumbed-in espresso machine is a game-changing convenience. I've filled reservoirs on my various machines for over 15 years, and I'm glad that's over.

What needs to be changed emphatically is the plumbed drain tray system provided by ECM. The drip tray is large and should be fashioned to be directly connected to a drain hose, but instead you're given a small plastic tub that fits under the main tray to allow connection to a drainage hose. It's far too small for even a home user and will ultimately spill over as you make your espressos. For the cost of the machine, this is an easy and essential fix. Whether they provide a large plastic 3D-printed tub or the part (available, but difficult to get stateside) to directly connect the stainless drip tray to a hose, we need to get ECM and Clive's, as their distributor, to fashion a new system. Please make it so!

The machine also has strong and consistent steam pressure for making your cappuccinos and other milk-based drinks.

I'd deduct 1/2 star for the poor drainage system on an otherwise amazingly well-crafted machine, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again from Clive's. Their service has been amazing!

This was my first espresso

This was my first espresso machine and I can say w/ 100% confidence that I made the right choice. It is easy to use and makes consistently exceptional coffee. The chrome can be hard to keep pristine but you know what you are getting into.

The Synchronika is one of my favorites! Great choice :)

Cannot rave enough about how

Cannot rave enough about how good and consistent the espresso is on the Synchronika. I had the M58 at first add had problems with it and ended up returning it. They say that dry pucks dont mean anything but on the Lucca M58 mine were so wet you could hardly get the grounds out. From the get go on the Synchronika my pucks are dry everytime and the espresso is soooo creamy. I can tell you the Synchronika is noticeably louder then the Lucca M58 but it has so much more steam power and consistency with shot pulls that its hands down worth the extra 300$. The drip tray on the Synchronika is also much easier to empty. The pressure release valve isnt built into the drip tray like it was on the Lucca M58 so you can lift it up to dispense instead of having to maneuver it around and in the process spilling water everywhere. Such a well built machine and I hope to have it for many years. One thing Im not sure I love is the eco mode where it basically goes into a sleep mode if not being used for a period of time. So if you go to use it again you have to wait for it to come to temp again. I still need to look up if thats something can be turned off but Im sure a lot of people would actually love that.

Very Pleased with CLIVE Purchase

I am very pleased with the build and aesthetic quality of this machine. I am also pleased with the entire Clive purchase process. They helped with my research, made helpful suggestions, and answered questions in a friendly and knowledgeable manner. They made me feel comfortable with an internet purchase of this magnitude. The shipping process was prompt. The machine was well packaged and arrived undamaged. It makes excellent espresso and looks great on my countertop.

We are so glad you are happy with your purchase and your experience with us! I personally own that machine as well and LOVE it!!!

It took two other machines to finally arrive at this perfect solution. I was replacing a 15+ year old Rocket r58 and other machines felt less solid and well made, also prone to leaks or other issues. This machine is a dream. Easy to use, perfect shots and built like an old Volvo! Solid, heavy(yes, it weighs 70 lbs) and built for use! And thanks to the Clive staff for gracious and no argument help!

Pump failed after 16 months

This machine was great until the pump failed in less than a year and a half old. I previously had a Rocket Espresso Evoluzione which had no issues with more than 14 years of daily home use. The ECM use is only 2 to 3 shots a day and suddenly the pump started making a very loud noise with very little preassure so my assumption is that I'll be replacing the pump. This was my first ECM machine - likely my last! Very disappointing!

Everything is great - machine

Everything is great - machine came double boxed, and there are good videos about some easy maintenance topics online from Clive. I had some additional questions about usual servicing schedules that weren't in the manual and the like which support was good about answering. I have no reservations at all about this machine.

First Five Months Awesome - Now, No!!

My previous updated review was not posted, hmmm. . . . After 5 months, steam is unpredictably malfunctioning - 1. 5 bars to 1. 0 to 1. 25 to zero!! Followed directions to disassemble and clean the temperature probe. Clive video says allen bolts are 2. 5 mm, actually, all but two are 3mm. Pictures of internals are different from my machine which made working on it a little nerve wracking. 19mm nut to get probe out is a real tight fit, had to use a 19mm deep socket. After all that and discovering how the allen screws were not properly aligned to begin with and the steam is still inconsistent. . . is this what $3600 gets you?? Each of my Rancillio Silvas lasted ten years without ever needing a repair. We'll see if Clive is going to make this right. Very unhappy with ECM and just as disenchanted with Clive's "Do It Yourself" apprentice program that you'll have to join if your machine ever breaks.

Steam Boiler Malfunctioning

Makes great espresso BUT after five months the steam boiler constantly losing pressure sometimes mysteriously dropping to zero! Clive has sent me instructions for a possible fix but for $3400 this is inexcusable. Others have reported similar experiences on Reddit. My previous Rancilio Silva's each lasted ten years without ever needing to be repaired. I'll update this when I try the "fix".

Should Be Better!

Updating my review. Portafilter handle keeps coming unscrewed, steam wand lever comes unscrewed, stream connection to machine leaked (fixed) and now the steam pressure is inconsistent - it's great and then suddenly drops to where there's no steam. It's just over 4 months old. For what this machine costs it should be perfect!!

Beast of a Machine With Some Issues

This machine is a beast - it should come with a leash! It makes amazing, rich, full espresso. But there are some annoyances especially for a machine that cost more than my first car. 1. The cutout to open the top to fill the water is sharp. It should have been machined better. 2. The handle to the portafilter keeps coming unscrewed. 3. The steam toggle also keeps coming unscrewed. These are issues my $1,000 Rancillio Silva never had (however, this makes much better espresso). Finally, this thing is BIG and HEAVY! They tell you to save the box. Between the machine and the box I'd be sleeping on my fire escape! One had to go!
