Say hello to The BIRD, Weber Workshops' first coffee brewer. Short for Brew In Reverse Direction, the BIRD is the first non-bypass brewer to create piston-driven vacuum brews in a glass device. Designed in collaboration with Christopher Flechtner, lead industrial designer for Slayer espresso machines, it explores the uncharted territory between espresso and pour-over to create something all its own: a rich, complex cup with a remarkably clean finish.
Instead of pushing a plunger down like a French press, the BIRD pulls up. Coffee and water steep together in full immersion, then a turn of the solid brass Wingnut raises the stainless steel Pod, creating a vacuum beneath it that draws the brewed coffee through the coffee bed and filter. Because no water bypasses the grounds, the BIRD handles much finer grinds than a typical pour-over, delivering rich extractions at any roast level. Brew with the reusable stainless mesh filter on its own, or add one of the included Abaca paper filters for extra clarity. Recipes range from quick, full-bodied brews to overnight cold brew.
Key Features
- Brew in Reverse Direction: Turning the Wingnut raises the Pod, creating a vacuum that draws coffee through the grounds and filter.
- No-bypass brewing: Brews up to 350mL, with every drop of water passing through the coffee bed.
- Finer grind capability: User-controlled vacuum pressure allows much finer grinding than a typical pour-over.
- Clever agitation: A few up-and-down plunges of the Crown spin the Claw into a vortex for even extraction. The Claw then pulls the Pod straight up to maintain steady vacuum pressure and doubles as a tripod drying stand after cleaning.
- Paper or stainless filtration: Use the reusable stainless mesh filter alone, or pair it with the included Abaca paper filters, a full year's supply.
- Premium materials: Thick 3mm borosilicate glass tubing with a fused base, a 316 stainless steel Pod, a 304 stainless steel Drive Shaft, a solid brass Wingnut and Crown, and an anodized aluminum cap and handle.
- Filter Paper Dock: Machined from solid aluminum and anodized, with a microfiber foot. A hidden magnet auto-centers it on the shoulder of the Weber EG-1.
- Tidy cleanup: The silicone Drip Catcher snaps onto the Pod so you can carry it to the sink without a drip. Every part disassembles and rinses in seconds. Hand wash only.
- Compact build: 85mm in diameter, 180mm tall, and 830g.
Ideal For
The BIRD is made for coffee drinkers who love filter coffee and want to explore new territory. It rewards curiosity, so if you enjoy experimenting with grind size, water temperature, and steep time, this is your kind of brewer. With up to 350mL per brew, it suits a single drinker or a few demitasse cups for a small group. There is no heating element, so you'll need your own kettle. If you want to press a button and walk away, a batch brewer is a better fit. Pair it with the Weber EG-1, whose shoulder holds the BIRD's Filter Paper Dock magnetically.
