I'm absolutely loving the wedge. I managed just fine for time without one but the difference in my extraction was immediately noticeable. Additionally I spend less time messing with my distribution and trying to get my tamp perfect and level. So I can pull shots faster and more repeatable than before. It's not cheap for a hunk of metal that spins some coffee but it is worth the price of admission, no doubt.

I'm not always looking for the most expensive. What I want is a nice feeling piece of hardware in the espresso process. Does it handle nicely? Does it adjust really well? Boy howdy, does this adjust. Matching the look of my accessories is not critical, but if I can match the wood and quality (such in this case) with my other walnut items is a nice thing. Lastly, I am absolutely sure that the puck is level. The SAI wedge fits what I wanted perfectly. I'm happy with the look and feel of this product. It's not cheap, but then again it looks like an expensive piece of kit that fits my setup.

I use the distribution tool in a way that skips tamping. It is very effective in producing a level, evenly distributed and tamped puck ready for pulling a consistent shot. It is easily adjustable and has outstanding workmanship. A must have as far as I’m concerned.
Pairs amazingly with the Saint Anthony Industries New Levy. Leveling with your finger is good, leveling with the wedge is great.

I recently purchased my first top-notch home espresso machine. (Lucca M58) I was watching video after video of espresso competitions and so forth to develop my technique. I was having a hard time believing that everyone was just moving the coffee around with their finger like I was, and I began to notice that many were using what I now know as a distributor. Without tamping, this evenly spreads your coffee out to become a flat surface, and sets you up for a perfectly even tamp. I use a bottomless portafilter, so I know when my tamp is off just from watching my coffee spray all over the place. This distributor has played a huge part in eliminating mistakes, and producing a great shot.

This makes distributing grounds a two-second exercise and completely negates any concern about even/consistent distribution. It’s extremely well built and designed - hefty. It’s hard to tell just how much it helps my shots, but I have been hitting my mark consistently well. Obviously it’s pricey, and there are cheaper tools available (though I’ve tried none other). I heard a common problem with most distribution tools is that the grounds stick to the tool, but there’s never even a grain stuck to the polished steel after I use it. It’s nice to plop it on top the basket, spin once and be done. I’m not so busy that I can’t use my finger, but it’s nice and easy. And most importantly, it removes a nagging concern I have when prepping each shot - consistency. Plus it looks sweet and you feel like a pro holding it.
It's true that this tool is a little pricey. But it's not crazy, for what you get. Mainly because after you dial it in it takes the place of a regular tamper and produces perfectly consistent shots. This, in turn, means that anyone, even a guest, can produce a perfect shot. Just tell them the dose to use and have them use the tamper and they'll get a great shot. I'm really glad I bought it.

I am pretty impressed with the wedge distribution tool. I am using the method to use this tool without further tamping. I think the result is a less pressure "tamp" with more even flow through the coffee puck. I am sold and happy that I tried this tool.
It's beautifully constructed, solid in your hand, and does its job perfectly. Now I don't even tamp.

The distribution tool is very sweet. After dialing it in, it is a wonderful daily ritual to prepare what I believe is a near perfect shot of espresso to start the day. It’s attractive, well-balanced and substantial to hold, but easy to manipulate. It does its job effortlessly. Love it.
