Baratza Sette 270 Espresso Grinder

I purchased a Profitec Pro 300 and Baratza 270 for installation into my sailboat. I have to say I am not much of an online shopper but after a few weeks of trying to source a machine locally in San Diego with no luck. I found Clive Coffee online. One of the best customer experiences I have had bar none. what a 1st class company. The Baratza was back ordered for a few weeks, and after getting the Pro 300 installed I had to leave town. When I returned a few months later expecting to find my Grinder at the Marina office. It was not there... I called expecting a nightmare customer service interaction.. Instead what I got was " That's not your problem sir, we don't want you to be without a grinder for your coffee machine, we will ship out a new one ASAP and look into what happened" Wow, that's Customer service. What a difference a proper grinder makes! PS the bag of free coffee that was sent with the machine was way better than what I have been able to source locally, I wish i could remember what they sent me..

Initially had issues, believe it has to due to loosening up in transit. I added a shim, and tightened everything up and issues were resolved. Very pleased with single dosing with machine. Very little grind retention. Very consistent grounds. Beautiful shots.

I read many terrific reviews on this machine and chose it because of it's low ground retention and because I keep my beans in a vacuum sealed container and want a grinder that works for single dosing. The end result is a flavor that is SO MUCH BETTER than our little rotary or cheap burr grinders! A Clive Coffee video I watched says upgrading your grinder is the most effective way to improve the flavor of your coffee, and I believe it. It is easy to set the grind with the course and fine adjustments and it is super easy to clean. The one downside is that it throws grounds as it grinds and there is a bit of a mess to clean up around the machine. My understanding is this has to do with moisture and static. For me, it is totally worth the brief clean up effort.

This thing is so sweet! Grind is very consistent. Did I mention almost zero retention! make sure to use the RDT technique and you are left with maybe 0.1 grams retention. Awesome grinder for single dosing!!! Honestly so stoked on this purchase. Espresso game was noticeably better after first use.

Loud but does a nice job and has good adjustments

This is the best espresso grinder I have ever used. It took me a little time to dial in the grind, but once I did, it was fantastic. It's louder than a typical home grinder — more like a commercial one. Easy to take apart and clean, with a really cool look. I use it every day.

Not the cheapest grinder out there, but it's low retention and fast. Very happy so far, although note that it is super loud.

Great machine

I did get a very early copy (I am assuming QA has improved) but it has just been constantly broken to the point I have used something else on and off for years. Even then I freaking hate it for espresso. It's loud, does not grind finely enough, has a fair bit of hidden retention (the per shot retention is low but it goes to a million different little spots so I am wondering if some of these people cleaned the grinder), it feels cheap and fiddly (especially the grind adjustment), and it's fairly messy with any static at all. Supposedly it's not that great for filter coffee and it has grind size issues for espresso (at least my copy). If the espresso is in range of the grind size it does produce a good tasting shot with very fluffy grounds.

This grinder has allowed me to learn a lot about brewing coffee and dialing things in. I know it’s no secret that this thing is loud. I just want to share that in my kitchen, when we are having a cozy barstool chat with guests… This creates some social awkwardness. I find myself taking 5-10 minutes on each cup of coffee just because I’m waiting for a moment in the convo where it doesn’t feel rude to interrupt with a VERY LOUD GRIND. It drowns out all conversation and I can’t help but feel it comes across as dismissive to what people are sharing. I also worry about waking family members up in the morning. When I’m solo it doesn’t bother me at all:P

I bought it because it has an Aeropress attachment, but that wasn’t effective for me. I’ve been using the big catch cup with no problems.

Works great still learning

The Sette 270 grinder by Baratza offers quick consistent mulching of beans. For my single dose use of medium and dark roasts the Sette appears to offer one of the best price/performance grinders available. Purchased on the recommendation of Clive Coffee staff I am very satisfied with this product.

Somewhat louder than I had hoped for

Hundreds of grind adjustment levels. Perfectly even, fluffy grounds. Great easy to use design. Just the best you can do for the money.

Not fine enough for some kinds of coffee beans, best to upgrade now than later. Clive coffee team was amazing about switching it out and upgrading it

Single dosing, all day every day. Love this grinder. I had to reassemble the burr stack. I believe it was a little wonky due to shipping, but after i took it apart and put it back together it’s been pushing out really consistent grinds.

Awesome grinder. People complain about it being too loud. It's not so bad, and this is coming form a musician with sensitive ears. If you can tolerate a blender making a smoothie then you can tolerate this grinder's noise. Been making espresso with it every morning and loving it.

Great grinder

First, about Clive. I will probably buy my next espresso machine from Clive. I’m impressed by their YouTube videos and believe they will be honest and helpful as I choose an upgrade from a Breville Barista Pro. About the Sette. It’s a small machine with small buttons. I have big ol’ hands. I am also an espresso purist. The Sette offers grinding versatility that I don’t require. I gave the Sette to my son, a (sniff) pour over drinker, and he is very happy with it. Thus the five stars for the grinder, and I give Clive five stars.

Almost no retention but messy unless you squirt the beans. From my own experience it works better as a single doser for that reason. Very fast and the timers work well. You’ll want to put in a least one of the shims that are supplied with the grinder if you are grinding for espresso.

We bought our new espresso maker from Clive but our Sette 270 locally second hand. When we had a problem, Baratza stepped up quickly with a replacement part, no questions asked and no charge.

Recently purchased an ECM Puristika from Clive Coffee and decided to upgrade my coffee grinder. I'm very pleased with the Baratza Sette 270 - It's extremely user friendly and the grind is easy to adjust to achieve a great espresso. I really like the ability to time the grind for my usual 18 grams of beans. Once set, just toss in the beans and it quickly grinds the beans with very little retention. I would buy it again.

Really an incredible machine for grinding espresso. Super simple and satisfying to adjust.
Shims are so easy to add; maintenance is an absolute breeze.

But this thing is just too loud for a home setting. At ~94db it's in the "requires hearing protection" category.

If you can handle the noise, it's the best bang for your espresso buck. Emphasis on the "bang".

The grinder itself punches quite a bit above its weight class with very little retention and consistency.

The problem though is that the build quality causes numerous reliability issues. Mine had the micro adjust wandering just a few weeks after purchase. I followed Baratzas instructions and tightened the screws slightly and then the macro adjustment would occasionally jump during grinding. So I backed off the screws again and retorqued more gently and then the micro adjust started to wander again.

Baratzas support is supposedly great and they will quickly send replacement parts or kits to fix it but I think I’d rather just have a grinder that works reliably rather than having to do the dance with the manufacturer on regular intervals

I like how many grind settings there are and we finally dialed it in…. However, the screen went dead within the first year so we can’t make any adjustments to the button controls. It is THE LOUDEST grinder I’ve ever heard. Everyone has to stop talking and the noise is horrible. I’m on the hunt for a new one and super annoyed that I even have to after paying this much.

I am primarily using the grinder for espresso, and to get a decent pull time, I am almost at the finest grind setting, not sure what burr wear will do over time. Needed to get a dosing ring/funnel (less than $10) in order to allow direct grind to portafilter without a huge mess, but once I figured that out, it works fine. Much louder than previous grinder (ancient Gaggia MDF), but grinds very quickly with near zero grind retention.

I have had my 270 for over a year. It has exceeded all my expectations and Baratza customer service is excellent.
