I'm fully satisfied with using this grinder each morning. I went from single-dosing a Specialita to grind-by-weight on the Atom 75 and it is makes my mornings faster. It is more than just GBW; the 75 is far more forgiving on the City/City+ beans I tend towards. Life is simpler.
Getting to this happy place was a bit of a journey. Let me share what I wish someone had told me.
First, this box arrived in rough shape. The contents were really jumbled around, the box gashed open. Even the box of Grindz added to the box had come open and the packets were thrown around. Fortunately it is a tank of a grinder and it worked fine. Except for the little dosing light. The good folks at Clive were kind enough to offer a replacement because I thought it just didn't work. When I took off the face of the grinder I found that in its tumbled journey the light had come out of its recess and was dangling inside the grinder itself. I replaced the light and it was fine.
Next was dialing in. I don't remember the Specialita needing seasoning. But the Atom 75 certainly does. The grind jumped around a lot until I got probably 1. 5kg through it. So be patient. It has settled out for me.
GBW has been a learning curve for me. At first I was getting +/- . 5g, which is a lot. After some time I discovered that if I didn't push the portafilter all the way into the holding forks, pulling back just a bit so it doesn't touch the back of the rig, that variation drops down to +/- . 2g. I assume those of us buying this stuff are OCD about coffee (well, maybe more than just coffee). Through meditation I've come to terms with +/- . 2g in, and I adjust the coffee out to deal with the variation and satisfy my inner nerd. Let me add that for a while I was weighing the dose to check against the Atom. Once I got the placement of the portafilter right, the match was spot on. So the Atom scale is spot on. It just has some variation at the weight it can hit. If you watch the output of the dose weight on the display as it is grinding, you'll see where it weighs out in that moment just after it stops grinding and just before the display cycles back to the set weight. I only use my scale for coffee out, which is the point of buying up to GBW, right?
