Eureka Oro Mignon XL Espresso Grinder

This grinder is a solid workhorse to use alongside an ECM Synchronika. I'm using it for single dosing so I bought a 3rd party single-dose hopper. Build quality is solid and grind retention is low. I'm moving from a Breville Smart Grinder Pro, so my only disappointment is lack of digital readout for the grind setting and that cleanup is a little more difficult when grinds miss the portafilter.

The chrome looks amazing. So fast and quiet. Having 2 settings is great. I use one for my daily double dose, and change it slightly to git 20g. I keep the single dose set at 1 second, just to let me quickly dump retention in changing grind. Stepless is so easy to use. I bought the ecm dose funel and don't like it. Just ordered the mignon one designed to work specifically with the grinder.

4 years ago, I purchased an ECM Classika PID Special Edition single boiler machine and a Eureka Mignon Oro XL grinder from Clive Coffee. I have had a great experience with both of them.

For a few months (6 or so?), I have been having an issue with the grinder. . . with the bean hopper mounted and screwed down, a loud humming noise would occur after the beans had been ground. I did a good cleaning, but that did not help. I had been dealing with this by backing the screw for the hopper out so that I could raise the neck of the hopper higher (which worked), but I thought that I should not have to do that.

Here is what worked to eliminate the noise (obviously a vibration from the grinder finding its way to the hopper neck):

I put a SINGLE TURN of black electrical tape around the neck of the hopper. I put the hopper back into the grinder (this was a little more difficult because the fit was a little tighter), tightened the screw, and. . . the noise disappeared.

I hope this review will be posted so that others that might observe this happening with their Mignon Oro XLs can have a potential way forward.

My espresso (made with the Andrea Premium) has been so bad over the last 8 months that I stopped making it and stuck to regular coffee. I thought I needed to take the machine in for service. Then I thought my 23-year old all purpose grinder needed fixing. It turns out the grinder was never going to be up to the task. I had never invested in a dedicated espresso grinder. The first shot I pulled with the Eureka Oro XL grind was better than anything in the previous year or so. I'm still dialing it in but we're drinking better espresso than any in the years I’ve owned this machine. And then we had to get a new dedicated coffee grinder!

Purchased in November, 2022, I loved this grinder for about a year and a half. And then it started being very inconsistent. Without touching the dial, one day it would give me a quick pour, and the next day, the water could barely make it through the grounds. I wrote in to Clive asking them if they had seen that problem, and to recommend a resolution. No answer. I cleaned it really well. It was good for about 2 weeks. That’s been the situation since then. It’s good for awhile, and then it acts up. Slowly the grind has had to be adjusted tighter. I am now at a 9 (yes, past “0”). I had 4 days of a lovely ground that gave me coffee that poured 30 grams in 30 secs. Yesterday it had quickened somewhat. Today it gave me 37 grams in 22 secs. And I really tamped hard. This grinder is too expensive to be so inconsistent.

this grinder has been a nightmare. For the last year we have been trying to get support to trouble shoot why it sometimes won't turn the burrs, sometimes it won't get coffee out despite clearly turning burrs, beans have gotten stuck. We have had it serviced. We have replaced the burrs with titanium. We have vacuumed and cleaned it and checked the build up. It is a full-time responsibility to have this grinder, and it is infuriating. We are careful and attentive machine owners, for both our grinder and our espresso machine. No one has helped us effectively, and we are very upset we spent so much money on either a lemon or a poorly designed grinder. Stay away.

Very happy with my purchased of Mignon XL, very quiet , the 65mm burrs take less than 6 seconds for 17 grams, I highly recommend using portafilter funnel to prevent waste and mess , to use the funnel I have to removed the portafilter holder which not a big deal, dialing in was easy took me few shots to got it right, 30 grams water in 25-30 seconds.

This little grinder is perfect for our needs. Classy looking, compact, solidly built and effortless to use.

The plastic used for the hopper is very thin and cheap. Had to replace the lid within days. Grinding is quiet and fast.

Works great. Low retention. Only downside is the flimsy hopper lid.

As grinders go especially for home use the Eureka brand is a staple in the coffee world and they make it easy select a grinder for your needs. I am building a coffee bar at home and the Mignon ORO XL was an easy choice for my new bar. Burr size, speed and history all went into my choosing the XL and I’m certain you’ll be happy with it as well.

I wanted to update my review after 2 years. It continues to be a great grinder. For a while I had a separate grinder for my espresso but I can taste the difference when I use this grinder. For some time now, I simply change the grind settings when I want to switch from drip to espresso grind. I single dose and get close to 0 retention. I still have not had to take the grinder apart to clean the grinds.

It’s quick and quiet!

Great grinder. Small enough to fit under our cabinets, strong enough to finish 18 grams in 6 seconds.

Vastly improved quality of expresso!

Easy to set up and use. Easy to load beans and adjust coarse vs fine grind. Only complaint is that the ground coffee often ends up outside the portafilter container which makes for a small mess to clean.

Great grinder. This is my first of its caliber, but I’m very very impressed. Little to no clumping. Solid machine!

Pros: Awesome grinding speed and very quiet. Looks nice too next to the espresso machine. Cons: Initially had some clogging issues - tried removing the clump disperser but then grounds would come out in bunches and lots of grounds retention. Replaced it and gave it a good cleaning...has been working fine since...might have been freshly roasted beans (two days).

Still getting used to it but so far it’s great. Quiet, consistent. Low retention and looks great on my counter.

Great Grinder for small business ! Works great and best designed.

I’ve been using it for a few weeks. It’s fast but quiet. Dialing in isn’t too challenging but definitely there are some retentions. Works great for medium roast but it tends to be clumpy for light roast.

I really like this machine. I am glad I was warned to give it two weeks to break in. It actually took less than that and it is now consistently giving me the same output as I put into it, and the grounds are staying in the portafilter basket. Also, after the reviews I had learn of people hating the mat that comes with the machine, I was ready to throw it away and not deal with it. I am glad I didn’t do that! It is very easy to clean up, with a lightly damp wash cloth, and I find it to be very useful. I love how easy it is to change the dial settings, though if I were to make any improvements to this machine it would be to allow me to store more time settings into memory - haha! - - but then I would be nit-picking. I did get the black. I would have preferred the chrome, but I must say I think the black is quite stylish and glad I went with it.

Nobody wants retention. However, if given the choice between retention that is exactly 2g every time or retention that is always under 1g but varies from 0g to 1g inconsistently, I would take the higher, consistent retention. If I run this on timed doses, I never get the same amount out, so even after dialing in, I still have to weigh every dose.

So I thought to myself, “just convert it to a single doser.” I bought the angled base and bellows hopper, and it is now set up for single dosing. However, retention is now somehow even less consistent. So now I am weighing every dose at before and after grinding.

21g in, 20.2g out. 21g in 21.3g out. 21g in, 19.7g out. 21g in, 21.9g out. This was my morning today.

I really wish I hadn’t bought this grinder. I had a Lucca Atom 65, but it was having firmware issues, and I got impatient waiting for the Lucca Atom 75 to drop. So I bought this. What a mistake. Now I get to start saving up for the Atom 75 from scratch. Such a waste.

My advice: if you have $1,000 for a grinder, keep saving until you have $1,400, and go with the Atom line.

Background - I was looking for an all purpose grinder and an upgrade from a good conical burr grinder (Baratza Precico). I single dose filter and expresso grind but would also like the flexibility to use beans in a hopper. After many hours of reviewing, I decided on Eureka. I liked Eureka’s long history, designed, made it Italy, and their reputation. I am sure the Specialita would have been great but I stretched my budget and ordered the Oro XL. Thanks for Clive who helped talk through grinder options.

This review is based on using the Oro XL grinder daily for over 4 months. Initially I used the hopper with the programmable time dosing and the last few months for single dosing for filtered and espresso daily.

The Oro XL is a heavy impressive grinder. The hopper is the perfect size for me, well designed, and good quality. The hopper fits in the top snug and I like how the bean shut off works. Gravity feeds the beans flawless (even with fresh dark roast).

The grind setting knob is quality and has perfect resistance. It is step-less but has 30 makings (1-10 and dashes in between) for a full rotation. This allows for making extremely minor adjustments to the grind, great for dialing in your espresso. I have no problem going more than a full rotation for my filter setting. To remind me if it has been turned more than once I simply use a golf ball marker.

I like the included quality mat, tapping stand, and brush. I believe Eureka included this to insure the grinder is rock solid when it is first engaged due to the high rpm. I do not think the mat it is difficult to clean mentioned by some reviews.

I was surprised that included hopper works well for single dosing. I have no need to get a special signal dose hopper. It is extremely low retention as reported. I am averaging .1. I tap the shoot with my catch hopper or portifilter to get that last .1-.2 g out and it is amazing how often there is 0 retention using this method. If you do not single does, the retention to clear out the grinds after shutting the hopper has averaged around10g.

As reported, the program timed dosing is consistent for the same bean/grind setting. I like the design so I can sit my scale directly under the grind shoot to measure the weight of the dose.

I have not had almost no clumping, excellent consistent grinds, almost no static. The grinder is quiet and fast (3.25 g/s average).

I have only cleaned the grinder once using a vacuum from the top and did not have to take the top burr out. On only one occasion, the grinder was semi clogged (grinds were not coming out at the normal 3.25 g/s rate). I carefully cleared this up by cleaning the shoot from the bottom up (using a cake testing tool). This worked well and avoided taking the machine apart. I have used the grinder for more than four months since and have had no issues.

I continue to be impressed with this grinder and would recommend this grinder. I would also recommend Clive for their excellent customer service, just outstanding.

Good grinder. Improved my espresso. Still has some retention. I installed bellows and single dose hopper. Feels good to use. Seems well made. Solid machine.
