Maria Escobar's coffee is a love story that began at the 2019 Best of Huehuetenango competition, where her lot took 5th place among more than 100 producers. For a farm under one hectare, that achievement is extraordinary. What caught our attention—and Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters'—was the distinctively classic Huehue profile: milk chocolate richness laced with bright blackberry. It was too good not to bring home every year. Through Atlas Coffee Importers, we've built an exclusive partnership with Maria, purchasing her entire harvest at a premium well above Fair Trade and ensuring full traceability from her farm to your cup.
Tasting Notes
This year's lot showcases everything we love about Maria's coffee, but with even more dimension. The base is silky and sweet—vanilla, milk chocolate, praline—but the forefront explodes with fruit and florals. You'll taste strawberry, cantaloupe, mandarin, watermelon, apple blossom, and that signature blackberry threading through the finish. The body is medium to full, the acidity lively but never sharp, and the aftertaste lingers with a sweet, cocoa warmth. It's complex enough to analyze and approachable enough to drink every morning.
Brew Methods
Maria Escobar shines across nearly every method. As espresso, it's syrupy and fruit-forward with a chocolate finish that holds milk beautifully. Pour over (V60, Chemex) highlights the floral and citrus notes while keeping the body round. In a French press, expect fuller chocolate and berry tones with a creamy mouthfeel. Cold brew brings out melon and vanilla with surprising clarity. This is a coffee that rewards experimentation.
