Need to Know

The Mazzer Philos is a 64mm flat burr single-dose grinder that brings commercial-grade precision into home and small café environments. With near-zero retention, swappable burr sets, and dual adjustment modes, it's built for coffee lovers who rotate between espresso, pour over, and batch brew without wanting to waste beans or compromise clarity. It occupies the sweet spot between prosumer single-dosers and entry-level commercial grinders, delivering café performance in a compact, thoughtfully engineered package.

What sets the Philos apart is its versatility. Stepped mode offers six-micron increments for repeatable precision across sessions. Stepless mode unlocks infinite adjustment for those final micro-tweaks when dialing in a new coffee. The front-access grind chamber and tool-free cleaning make daily maintenance intuitive, while the dose finisher system ensures every last particle makes it into your portafilter or brew vessel. This is a grinder designed for real use, not just specs on a page.

Key Features

  • 64mm flat burrs: Two burr options available — I189D for traditional espresso with chocolate and nut notes, or I200D for clarity-focused filter brewing that highlights acidity and fruit
  • Dual adjustment system: Switch between stepped mode (6-micron increments) and stepless mode (infinite adjustment) depending on your workflow
  • Near-zero retention: Low-retention chamber design and integrated dose finisher mean virtually no waste between doses
  • Compact footprint: 27.5 lbs with a café-quality build in stainless steel, brass, and anodized aluminum
  • Tool-free cleaning: Front-access grind chamber makes daily maintenance fast and simple
  • Single-dose workflow: Weigh your beans, grind, and move on — no hopper, no stale coffee, no guesswork

Ideal For

The Mazzer Philos is perfect for intermediate to advanced home baristas who want café-level grind quality without the footprint or workflow compromises of traditional hopper-fed grinders. It's ideal for those who rotate between brew methods — pulling espresso in the morning and switching to pour over in the afternoon — and need a grinder that adapts quickly without wasting beans. Small cafés and roasters will appreciate the durability and swappable burr system, which lets one grinder serve multiple roles. If you value precision, flexibility, and a clean workflow, the Philos delivers on all three fronts.

It’s been about a month with the Mazzer Philos, and I can honestly say it has been a game changer. Excellent consistency for espresso, pour over, AeroPress, and drip coffee, with near zero retention every time. Extremely happy with this upgrade!

As advertised. I’d previously used a DF83. The Mazzer Philos is really solid. Pretty much 19g in and 19g out. Dialing in is exceptional. I’ve left it in step mode. I use it exclusively for med to med/lt roasts. I189D burrs. I make cappuccinos mostly.

Upgraded from Timemore 078s to this grinder. I use this with my linea mini and my daily workhorse. What I love is the solid build quality and consistency of the grind setting because of the stepped adjustments. I am able to easily move between pour over (occasionally) and back to espresso which I normally do. The dosing cup, also doesn't have any static and its clean after every single use. Highly recommend it

Just a week in, but I LOVE the Phillos grinder. It's pefect for my needs: easy to adjust, and to record/remember the setting, easy to extract all the coffee grounds before switching to decaf in the afternoons, and it promises to be easy to clean. It's unusual in appearance--looks like it could fire a large projectile across my kitchen--but it feels great to use, very solid and satisfying switches and knobs. Before moving my Mazzer Super Jolly to the lake cabin to replace ancient unbranded burr grinder whose erratic performance triggered this purchase, I dialed in and ground the same Ethiopian medium-roast beans in both Mazzer grinders. The Philos was more a more delicate and layered cup--brighter, more floral/citrus, less umami--more articulate. I wonder if I should have gone with the l189 burs, though in general I use the espresso machine with medium roast coffees and the l200-ground shots are delicious--and other family members will grind for filters. I may have to buy the espresso burrs and compare....

Even if I couldn't taste the difference I'd recomment the Philos--it's a great machine, simple and solid and practical.

Paul at Clive helped me upgrade from a mid-tier grinder to this Philos and with my first shot the difference in clarity was apparent. The biggest reason for the upgrade was to quickly swap between regular and decaf (wife only drinks decaf) every day and the repeatability of the Philos is unparalleled. It takes me back to my barista days and really is like having two dedicated grinders.

I love this grinder. The

I love this grinder. The overall size and looks can be controversial but those are things that I appreciate and enjoy about this machine. It feels very well built, is extremely easy to clean and delivers consistent results every time. I no longer use RDT and experience minimal to no retention. The quality is top notch and gives me confidence that this thing will perform for a long time. Grind adjustments are easy and I love that I can disassemble (very easily) to clean and not lose my grind setting. This grinder is in a very competitive space with a lot of great options out there. However I feel no remorse choosing Mazzer over other brands in the 64mm market.

Incredible grinder. Most easy to use and can switch between coffees instantly. Super easy to dial in. Take your espresso to a whole new level even compared to other high end grinders such as my old one Eureka Atom.

Terrific grinder. I roast all

Terrific grinder. I roast all my coffee and find it necessary to switch between coffees a lot—sometimes 3 or 4 in a morning. And grinds—might go from a pour over to espresso several times/week. Currently espresso grind is set at 26, decaf (the last batch 20) and pour over 115. Everything positive you’ve read is true: grind very easy to adjust and reproducible, very little residual left and what is there is easy to clean out with the cleanup tool, quiet, a snap to disassemble/reassemble, a reasonable footprint size, high quality feel etc. I have a little trouble removing the bean chute cap without pulling the whole chute wonky but it isn’t necessary to push it on completely tight either. I am using this with an ECM Synchronika and it’s a great pairing—one gets the sense that they are on the same playing field. I have a lot of confidence in this grinder based on the last month of use. Even if you are mainly using the same coffee all the time, using a single dose grinder like this will encourage you to keep your unused bean product stored in an airtight container—vs a large hopper where the bean is more susceptible to oxidation. You do need to weigh the beans out before every grind so if you want that automated by weight or time you might consider another product.

Incredibly Fun & Powerful

This grinder is meant to be used as a second grinder for a slow bar in a cafe, but it also shines at home. The build quality is impeccable, and all the touch points feel engineered to just work. The grind adjustment on the rear is smooth and intuitive to adjust. The grinding is fast and smooth, leaving virtually no mess on the counter. The grinder gets you as close to zero retention as possible with the bag knocker and the grounds saver. The burrs are easily accessible and easy to keep clean. I'd recommend this grinder to anyone who wants to take a single dose. This grinder will easily last for over 10 years.
