Description

Centri Coffee's Organic West Coast Roast is an unapologetic love letter to the bold, dark-roasted tradition that defined specialty coffee in the Bay Area. Inspired by Alfred Peet's legendary roasting style from the 1960s and '70s, this Guatemala Huehuetenango coffee is taken deep into second crack—where sugars caramelize fully and oils rise to the surface—creating a cup that's rich, thick, and intensely satisfying.

Sourced from the Association of Special Coffee Producers of Huehuetenango (ASOPCE), a cooperative of 450 smallholder farmers working at elevations between 1,350 and 2,050 meters, this certified organic coffee starts with exceptional beans: Bourbon, Catuai, Caturra, Pache, and San Ramon varietals, all fully washed and sun-dried. The roast does the rest, transforming bright highland acidity into something altogether different—dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and a whisper of smokiness that never turns bitter.

Tasting Notes

West Coast delivers bold, roast-forward flavors with dark chocolate at the center, supported by notes of toasted walnut and subtle caramelized sugar. The body is thick and viscous, coating the palate with an almost syrupy mouthfeel. Acidity is low and muted—this coffee doesn't sparkle, it grounds you. The finish lingers with bittersweet cocoa and a hint of roasted grain, clean despite the darkness of the roast.

Brew Methods

This roast shines brightest in immersion methods. French press brings out the full body and lets the chocolate notes bloom with a bit of cream. Drip coffee works beautifully—just keep your ratio on the generous side (1:15 or so) to avoid over-extraction. While not traditionally an espresso roast by modern standards, West Coast pulls a classic shot with heavy crema and bold intensity, perfect for milk drinks or straight if you like your espresso assertive. Pour over is possible but loses some of the magic; this coffee wants contact time and body, not clarity.
