Since my friend introduced me to coffee recently, I was addicted. I got a Flair Flex Neo not long ago to learn coffee, although I am happy with the lever experience, lacking of a steamer for latté was annoying. Once I feel I know the basics of espresso, I decide to get myself a real one, and the choices are many.
Because I enjoy the process of making coffee equally to drinking one, the super automatics were rule out, as well as the ones that doesn’t give people much control. I also looking for quality build as part of that experience. The ones that short listed were ECM, Profitec and Lelit due boiler E61s with flow control. Since I am not planning on plumbing, and the usage will be very light, Profitec Pro 600 was selected. I bought the Profitec factory flow control unit, and so far only installed the group head gauge.
I have a DF54 grinder paired with Flair before, and it seems capable for the Pro 600. I used grind size (mark) around 10-11 to get the 2:1 ration in around 22-25s. Tamping seems make a difference in extract speed, so I upgrade to a 30lb constant force tamper, a distributor, and with the Lunar scale that came with the machine from Clive, I believe those are the essential tools to complete the set.
Heat-up time is very satisfying, indeed. I was thinking of the ECM Synchronika II for its fast heat-up unit inside the E61 group, and I don’t believe that is need in my case at all. I turn the machine on after I wake up, and the machine is ready way before I am. I never need to count the heat-up time, but it seems reach the target temp. in just a few minutes, even before I start process my coffee beans. I bough smart switch for it, and decide not to use.
The machine is beautifully crafted in Germany, levers are very satisfying to use. Noise level is not bad at all. Drip tray doesn’t make noise. Coffee quality is as one would expect from ECM/Profitec. Steam milk is another selling point of this machine, very good power, however, the wand is very warm. The baskets come with the machine are good quality and very usable. Clive version comes with a bottomless portafilter, which is a plus and $70 saving!
The tank is fully covered by the cup tray. There are no holes over the tank, so there is no issue for dust, or particle falling inside the tank. You do need to move the whole tray to add water.
Machine setup was without surprise. The PID controls are backward at the best. ECM/Profitect are far behind digital age. They are not here for innovation. If you are looking for iPad style UI, or a build-in scale, looking for elsewhere. I was thinking of 4-star rating for this reason, but it is unfair because I know this in advance. Buyer looking for graphical interface to play with brewing profiles etc. there are wireless coffee sensor from 3rd party, plus a smart scale like the Lunar, you can accomplish most of it on iPhone/iPad, but the new generation build-in controls are out of question.
Minor things I don’t like beyond the user interface:
1. Clive version of the Pro 600 doesn’t have the standard black side board, which I think pretty, although the mirror finish looks fine as well.
2. The build-in gauge is too low to see. I like the ECM placement better. I think they should replace the pump pressure gauge with a gauge on the E61 group head. Some of the Chinese coffee machine makers are doing that.
3. The pressure adjustment doesn’t go low enough to try low pressure brewing. I think mine can go to 8 bar but not lower; Also, the adjustment is not smooth, nor responsive.
4. I wish Profitec put a drain port in the drip tray, so for people place the machine near the sink can take advantage of it.
5. The green light for the power switch can be more elegant and less intrusive.
Nothing is perfect in this world, but I enjoy my new shiny Pro 600.
