Eureka Mignon Grinder Comparison
Choosing an espresso grinder with your new machine keeps getting easier and more accessible. When home espresso was still relatively obscure, you’d often have to settle for a grinder that looked and performed like a toy; they often had small burrs, were not very durable, and produced clumpy coffee grounds. On the other end of the spectrum, to land an espresso-focused grinder with superior performance, you’d often be forced to get a commercial grinder that was too large for a home counter, exceedingly expensive, and with a considerable amount of grind retention.
Eureka’s Mignon line of home espresso grinders perfectly bridges the gap between home convenience and café quality performance. We will discuss the Eureka Mignon grinders that we carry, who they’re for, and how your new Eureka grinder will pull amazing shots for years to come.
55mm Burrs is the Sweet Spot
We've found that flat 55mm burrs are the sweet spot for home grinding that will produce fluffy ground and great tasting shots. The Mignon grinders are ideal for home baristas who make a few espresso shots daily, need a small-sized machine, and value consistency. Best of all, the Mignon grinders are the quietest ones available, not just within the Eureka range but among all the grinders we offer at Clive. Like others in this collection, the Mignon series boasts a “micro-metric” infinite adjustment dial, allowing for precise fine-tuning of your espresso shots.
- Silenzio 55—Essentially the base model of the Mignon line geared toward a manual workflow and a no-frills grinding experience. Recently upgraded to 55mm burrs from 50mm burrs. Minimal electronics.
- Specialita—Mainly a workflow upgrade from the Silenzio, the Specialita adds an intuitive touchscreen to program two timed dosing options. Adds consistency for back to back shots.
- Zero—The base single-dosing model. Decked out with an optional rubber bellows, portafilter fork, and a 58mm dosing cup. With a simple on/off operation and extremely low grind retention, the Zero is ideal for a single-dosing workflow.
- Libra—Almost a copy/paste of the Specialita, expect for it's slightly larger footprint. The Libra has all of the convenience features plus the built-in scale to grind-by-weight. Accurate down to the tenth of a gram, the Libra is the most consistent out of the bunch.
65mm Burrs: A Worthwhile Upgrade
- XL—The XL is the specialita's slightly larger and more powerful sibling. Spinning at 1650 rpm, the XL’s 65mm flat burrs are Eureka’s diamond inside burrs—harder than stainless steel and longer lasting. The larger micrometric adjustment knob makes fine-tuning easier as well. The XL can handle a dinner party worth of drinks without skipping a beat.
- Single Dose—The Single Dose is several steps up from the Mignon Zero in grind quality and build. The Single Dose has the same specs as the XL, but the grinder is positioned at a 15-degree angle to optimize coffee flow through the chute. The Single Dose is as close to a zero-retention experience at this price point, and the wood touch-points are a nice premium touch that elevates the experience further.
When it comes down to grind quality and build quality, you’d be happy with any grinders in the Mignon line. When differentiating between them, it comes down to a few key considerations: single-dosing or full hopper workflow, programable features or a simplified experience, and burr size. Eureka does a fantastic job of making home espresso more accessible to folks exploring making espresso, and that’s something we can get behind 100%.
