How to Fix Low Espresso Pressure on Your E61 Machine
If your E61 machine is reading low pressure — 6 or 7 bar instead of 9 — start at the puck, not the pump. The Core Answer: Start With the Puck, Not the Pump

Here's the mistake that costs people entire weekends: they assume low pressure means their pump or their OPV is broken, so they open up the machine before they've ruled out the puck. Don't do that.
On an E61 machine, the pressure reading on your gauge is created by resistance, the ground coffee pushing back against the water. If your grind is too coarse or your dose is too light, water flows through with almost no resistance, and your gauge reads low. This is not a machine fault. This is your coffee telling you it's not fighting back hard enough.
So before you touch a screwdriver, run this test: pull a shot with your normal setup and watch the gauge. Now grind two or three settings finer and pull again. If your pressure climbs toward 9 bar, congratulations, you never had a machine problem. You had a dialing problem, and you just fixed it.
Only if your pressure stays stubbornly low across a range of grind settings, including grinds so fine the shot chokes to a drip, do you have an actual equipment issue worth investigating. That's when you move to the pump, the OPV, and finally the gauge. The vast majority of the "my E61 has low pressure" calls we take are solved at the grinder. Order matters because it saves you from misdiagnosing a perfectly healthy machine.
The Factors That Actually Matter
1. Grind size and dose. This is your first and most common culprit. A standard 58mm double basket wants roughly 18 to 20g of coffee, and it wants that coffee ground fine enough to slow the shot to a 25 to 30 second pull. Too coarse, too little coffee, or a poorly distributed puck (channeling) all drop your pressure. Fix your prep before you suspect your hardware.
2. The OPV (over-pressure valve). The OPV is a spring-loaded valve that bleeds off excess pressure to keep your brew pressure capped, usually around 9 to 10 bar. If someone sets it too low, or the spring has weakened, your ceiling drops, and you'll never see 9 bar, no matter how fine you grind. Adjusting it is a genuine mechanical fix, but it requires a blind filter (a solid, no-hole basket) to read static pressure, and access to the valve inside the machine.
3. The pump. Most E61 machines use a vibratory pump rated to deliver well above 9 bar. Pumps can weaken over years of use or after running dry, but a dying pump is far rarer than people assume. If your pump is failing, you'll usually notice it struggling to reach pressure even against a blind filter.
4. The gauge itself. E61 gauges drift and occasionally fail. If your shots taste great, are within a normal window, and look right in the cup, but the needle reads low, don't trust the needle over your palate. A blind-filter test against a known-good reading will tell you if the gauge is the liar in the room.
5. Water and flow restrictions. A clogged gicleur (the small jet inside the E61 group), a scaled-up group head, or a filthy shower screen can all mess with flow and pressure. If your machine has been running hard water without treatment, this climbs the suspect list fast, which is one more reason to run filtered, soft water in the 35 to 85 ppm range from the start.
How to Diagnose It, Order der
Run these steps in sequence, and stop the moment your pressure returns.
Step one: dial the grind. Grind finer, three settings at a time, and watch the gauge. If it climbs, you're done.
Step two: blind-filter test. Drop a blind (solid) basket into your portafilter and run the pump with nothing else in it. With no coffee flowing through, the machine reaches its maximum static pressure, which is your OPV setting. If it maxes out at 6 or 7 bars, your OPV is set too low,w or your pump is weak. If it reaches 9-10 bar against the blind filter but drops during real shots, your problem is back at the puck.
Step three: adjust the OPV. If the blind-filter test shows a low ceiling, the OPV needs adjusting. On most E61 machines, this is a spring-tension adjustment; tightening raises pressure. Small turns. Re-test after each.
Step four: clean the group. Backflush with a proper espresso machine cleaner, pull and clean the shower screen, and check the gicleur for scale. A neglected group can quietly strangle the flow.

What Most Guides Get Wrong
Most articles tell you to "adjust your OPV" as the first move. That's backward, and it's why people end up with a machine that's more broken than when they started.
Here's the reality: the OPV sets your ceiling, not your actual brew pressure. The puck's resistance determines your actual brew pressure during a shot. You can have a perfectly set 9-bar OPV and still see 6 bars on the gauge during a shot simply because your grind is too coarse; the water is escaping faster than the OPV ever needs to intervene. If you "fix" this by cranking the OPV up, you've now mis-set a valve that was never the problem, and the day you dial in a proper grind, you'll be pulling 11-plus bar and wondering why your shots taste harsh and bitter.
The OPV is a governor, not an accelerator. It only does anything when pressure tries to exceed its setpoint. If your shots are flowing freely and reading low, no amount of OPV adjustment will fix that; the puck has to create the resistance first. Grind and dose come before the screwdriver. Always.
