LUCCA M58 Sunto Espresso Machine Overview

LUCCA M58 Sunto Espresso Machine Overview

It's about time to unveil what we've been working on with our Italian partners at Quick Mill over the last several months. We are proud to introduce the latest iteration of Clive Coffee's flagship E61 espresso machine—the LUCCA M58 Sunto.

For over a decade, the original LUCCA M58 set the standard in its class and it was the answer we gave when someone wanted serious dual-boiler performance and an heirloom piece that they can take pride in. From the M58 V1, V2, and so on, the LUCCA M58 has, in a sense, become the hearth of the espresso lover's home. The LUCCA M58 Sunto takes that foundation and improves it where it counts, helping you make better espresso, faster, with precision, and in style.

Still built exclusively for Clive by Quick Mill in Milan. Still the dual-boiler we've recommended more than any other machine at this level. Just better.

Compact & heats up incredibly fast

When you start researching home espresso machines at this level, they tend to be larger, and thus, have more thermal mass and take longer to heat up than, say, starter machines that use thermoblock or thermocoil heating systems, or smaller single-boiler machines. People really just want their espresso and want it fast. The M58 solves both of those issues.

  • Compact footprint: At 12.75" wide and 14.25" tall, the M58 Sunto is our most compact full-size E61 dual-boiler, allowing it to fit in more places in your home, especially if you have lower cabinets, or if you need to plumb in your machine to a water source. This is the perfect option for those tight spaces without needing to comprimise on, well, anything!
  • 12 minute heat up: Because of a modernized E61 and an additional heating element, from a cold start, you're ready to pull shots within 12 minuets—40% faster than most standard E61 machines. This is an incredible boon for anyone who needs coffee first thing in the morning with absolute consistency.
  • Thermal stability: By the same token, the dedicated heating element in the group head keeps the temperature rock solid, eliminating E61 temperature swings. You'll feel this difference if you pull several shots back to back or if you're making several drinks for guests.

The OLED PID is stacked with features

The legacy M58's PID was good, but it was lacking in both features and a logical user interface. We've improved both in spades. Navigating the PID is much more intutive, clear, and satisfying. Let's dive into what else is inside.

  • OLED PID display: The PID is flush with the machine's front panel, situated above one of the M58 Sunto's signature navy blue guages. It's inconspicious and doesn't distract from the aesthetic of the machine, while still being easy to read. While the machine is on it displays both the brew and steam boiler temperatures, as well as a shot timer during extraction, so you can easily build an espresso recipe.
  • Programable pre-infusion: Programmable pre-infusion is built in, which lets you saturate the puck at low pressure before ramping  up to full flow. It's a simple way to improve shot consistency and experiment by bringing out more nuance in lighter roasts. You can set it and forget it or change it up for different coffees.
  • Plumb in mode: It's easier than ever to plumb in the M58 Sunto. After configuring the mode in the PID, all you need is water filtration & softening and a water supply line
  • Additional features: Features like ECO mode, standby mode, and cleaning reminders to make your experience seamless.

Wood touchpoints and colorways

Front view of the LUCCA M58 Sunto espresso machine lifestyle by Clive CoffeeThe walnut touchpoints, bottomless portafilter handle, steam & hot water joysticks, and laser cut drip tray come standard on both colorways (matte black & stainless steel). We're biased, but we think It's one of the most handsome machines at this price point and that's saying something in a segment flooded full of hardware. It's exceedingly rare for wood customs to come standard with the machine, but it's part of the M58 Sunto's identity. Best of all, they're all custom made by a local craftsman in Portland, Oregon, our HQ.
The walnut-and-stainless aesthetic is, frankly, hard to argue with. The matte black version, all murdered out, is even more striking, and still comes standard with walnut trim, which is a combination that works better than it has any right to.

Who this machine is for

The LUCCA M58 Sunto is for any espresso enthusiast who wants the best of the best. And let's be real; you're going to use this machine every day and look at it every day, we designed and built this machine with exactly that thought in mind. This is the machine that won't go out of style becuase it's timeless.

A dual-boiler is the epitome of the home espresso experince, yet, what most people don't know is that this level of machine is not more difficult to use or to learn on, it makes espresso easier becasue it gives you all of the tools that you need to succeed. Things like: adjsutable temperature control down to the degree, the ability to steam at a cafe level, and the ability to experiment and grow with your equipment. Why not start out with the best on day one? It's a no-brainer.

Want to go further? There's a flow control version

If you're the kind of person who wants to manipulate pressure curves mid-shot, or slowing flow at the start to extend pre-infusion, or tapering off at the end to preserve clarity, the LUCCA M58 Sunto with Flow Control ships with our LUCCA flow control device pre-installed. It adds a paddle to the group head that gives you manual control over flow rate in real time. It's a fun tool, and it enhances what the machine is capable of, especially with naturally proccesed coffees, lighter roasts, and different espresso techniques and recipes e.g., Slayer shots or soup shots. If you already know you want it, get it from the start. Retrofitting later is possible, but why not let us do the work for you

Set it up right from day one

LUCCA Precision Scale Lifestyle by Clive Coffee

The Sunto ships with a walnut bottomless portafilter and spouted portafilter, an 18g double basket, a 20g triple basket, and a blind basket for cleaning, so you have what you need to start pulling shots immediately. Witht that said, a few additions make a real difference in how your setup functions day to day.

The LUCCA Accessories Kit is the cleanest way to fill in the gaps. It bundles the essentials (precision scale, tamping mat, frothing pitcher, knock box, shot glass, and microfiber towels) into a single purchase that pairs cleanly with the machine's aesthetic. Everything is built to the same standard and designed to live next to the M58 Sunto without looking out of place.

Keep it clean

Steaming billowing out lifestyle by Clive Coffee

An E61 dual-boiler is a precision instrument, and it rewards the people who treat it like one. Backflushing the group head regularly, using filtered and soft water, and keeping the steam wand clean aren't optional maintenance tasks, they're what separates a machine that pulls great shots for a decade from one that develops problems in year two.

The Espresso Cleaning Kit has everything you need: Cafetto EVO for backflushing the group, grinder cleaner scahets for removing coffee oil buildup on the burrs, and milk cleaner for the steam wand. If you're not sure how often to do each or exactly how to do it, our Espresso Machine Cleaning & Maintenance guide walks through the full routine, what to do daily, weekly, and monthly, so your setup stays operating at full capacity.
