Some espresso tools are more personal than others: the tamper exemplifies the epitome of the essential workflow accessory. Making espresso without a tamper that feels right is like being a chef with a dull knife. Like a sharp knife, the tamper is the tool you reach for to pull every shot, the last touch before those grounds become liquid gold. It's part function, part ritual, and a tiny flex (depending on your tamper) sitting next to your espresso setup. Without it, there's one thing we know for sure—espresso as we know it wouldn't be the same. 

With that kind of aura around one small accessory, it's easy to wonder: How much does my tamper choice matter? First, a refresher of the vital function that the humble tamper serves. 

The Contenders 

Tamping serves a simple but essential purpose: compressing coffee grounds into a dense, even puck. This creates resistance so your espresso machine can build pressure at the group head and helps ensure water flows evenly through the coffee bed. Could you skip tamping entirely? Technically, sure. Should you? No. Unless you plan on pressing your grounds with your fingertips (please don't), you'll need a tamper. 

Plastic Tampers 

Okay, this isn't a serious contender, but most machines ship with one of these, so you can start brewing espresso immediately. They qualify as tampers in the way that instant coffee qualifies as coffee—it works, but only if you're in a pinch—or seriously desperate. They're lightweight, awkward, and inconsistent. Also, plastic tampers often leave untamped grounds around the circumference of the coffee bed, which is annoying. When you tamp, you want everything to be tamped. Keep it around if you're waiting for a proper tamper to arrive. Otherwise, you may want to consider recycling it. 

Traditional Tampers 

When you think tamper, this is what comes to mind. Like the plastic tamper, traditional tampers are straightforward and manual in their functioning but have several benefits that justify their price. 

They have a solid handle, a flat base, and materials ranging from stainless steel to aluminum, wood, or polymers. They're comfortable and familiar and allow for a satisfying level of manual control. Using one is like using a driving stick. Sure, it takes more practice to get consistent, but the connection to the process is the reward. Plus, with all the options on the market, finding one that feels like yours is easy.

Here are our top traditional tampers: 

  • Plastic/stainless steelThe LUCCA Espresso Tamper ($40)—This classic is hefty and has a snug portafilter fit. 
  • Wood/stainless steel: Custom and made in-house, the Clive Wood Tamper ($85) is elegant to the core. It perfectly matches machines with walnut and maple wood customs. 
  • Polymer/stainless steel: The best end-to-end tamper, the Pullman Big Step ($130-160), has the most snug fit and works well with any precision basket, including VST, IMS, and Weber Workshops.  

Self-Leveling & Depth-Calibrated Tampers

The most crucial aspect of tamping is consistency. If you love repeatability and dialing in every variable, a calibrated tamper is more up your alley. Tampers like the Saint Anthony Industries New Levy or Weber Workshops' Really Nice Tamper both rest on the portafilter rim, ensuring every tamp is level, eliminating tamping errors, and helping improve your puck prep.   

Weber's Really Nice Tamper is mechanically self-leveling and employs a spring that gives you a perfectly even and satisfying tamp each time. If you want more zeal, you can add a stronger spring. 

The New Levy's depth can be adjusted, so once you're dialed in, you're locked in. Less wrist strain means more consistency; however, changing your dose or basket might mean readjusting. Still, for those chasing precision, these tampers are difficult to beat.

Automatic Tampers

Say hello to the PUQpress Mini. Set your tamping pressure, lock in your portafilter, and let the press do the rest. It's fast, consistent, and built to handle the heavy workloads of cafés, but we won't judge if you add one to your home bar. We've got one in the Clive office—though, full disclosure, many of us still tamp manually. Old habits die hard. 

What About Convex or Wavy Tamper Bases?

Some tampers go the extra mile with specialty bases. La Marzocco’s tampers are convex. The theory with this alternative shape is that the coffee puck is more compressed toward the center, making extraction easier for beginners. We're not so sure that convex tampers really have this intended impact. Weber's leaves a wavy imprint on the puck that looks like a zen garden. The latter's design looks great on TikTok and feels unique, but in our experience, they don't do much to change the taste of your shot. If it speaks to your aesthetic, go for it. Otherwise, a classic flat base will serve you just fine.

Final Thoughts

Here's the cold hard truth: great espresso is possible with any of these tampers—even the plastic one (begrudgingly). There's no wrong answer regarding the type of tamper you should choose, but the tamper you choose will shape your experience. And It's all about what kind of experience you value: consistency, ease, or aesthetics. A mix of all of them, perhaps? Go for a traditional tamper if you love the process.
