Profitec JUMP Espresso Machine Overview

Profitec JUMP Espresso Machine Overview
Quick Take

The Profitec JUMP is a feature-rich heat exchanger espresso machine under $2k with automatic pre-infusion, walnut accents, and a 3-way temperature switch.

  • 3-way temperature switch adapts brew temps for light, medium, or dark roasts without needing a PID
  • Automatic pre-infusion and integrated shot timer simplify workflow for beginners and enthusiasts alike
  • Walnut wood furniture and joystick controls elevate aesthetics while maintaining café-quality steam pressure

Heat exchange machines have long been known for their low-tech interface and simplified user experience—all while giving you café quality steam pressure for a great price. What if I told you that the Profitec JUMP has all of this and has somehow managed to pack more features and come with walnut wood furniture? No, we’re not kidding; the JUMP is a modern heat exchanger for the modern home barista who wants an easygoing workflow, features like automatic pre-infusion, tremendous steam pressure, and a showstopper of a machine, all for under 2k.

The Profitec JUMP is the spiritual successor to the Profitec Pro 400, in a significant effort to make their lineup more dynamic and attractive for what home users have come to expect from quality-built espresso machines. This fresh shift toward dynamism is reflected in the name JUMP, an ethos that matches the other machines like the GO and the DRIVE—replacing their minimalist numbered machine cadence. The JUMP offers several features that the Pro 400 offers, including some new features with which we fell in love. Let’s go over them.

More Temperature Control

In a nutshell, heat-exchange machines function with a large steam boiler (which is why they’re ideal for milk steaming); however, the lack of a brew boiler is not an issue. The JUMP offers a 3-way temperature switch that allows you to tailor your brew temperature based on your coffee’s roast level or if you want more steam pressure.

  • The middle default position (II)—199-204F is recommended for most medium to light roasts

  • The lower position (I)—194-199F is recommended for darker roasts

  • The higher position (III)—204-208F is recommended if you want to maximize your steam pressure

While the JUMP doesn’t give you precise temperature control, down to the degree, for your brew temperatures, we love the flexibility the 3-way switch allows. If you want the most precise temperature control, we suggest you consider a single or dual boiler with a PID instead. Compared to older-style heat exchangers, the JUMP isn’t a one-trick pony. Yes, it steams fantastic milk, but it offers so much more than that.

As with any heat exchange machine, you will still need to perform a cooling flush before pulling a shot. A cooling flush removes the super-heated water left in the heat exchanger tube, which will exceed normal brewing temperatures. Simply remove the portafilter from the group head and lift the brew lever up all the way for about four seconds.

Quality of Life Improvements

The added temperature stability and flexibility is a welcome addition to the humble heat-exchanger, but these features are even better:

  • Automatic pre-infusion can be set to run automatically for each shot that you pull. While you cannot change the time interval, you can add LUCCA E61 Flow Control for more hands-on control with pre-infusion, infusion, and post-infusion. Plus, we’ll install it for you before your JUMP ships out. Pre-infusion can help with extraction issues such as channeling and offer more tastier shots.

  • PID with integrated shot timer: The PID screen, above the dual pressure gauge, is on the front panel. It displays the temperature of the steam boiler. When you lift the brew lever to start your shot, the PID starts counting down until you stop your shot. Having a shot timer is a huge convenience, especially when you’re building an espresso recipe and trying to dial in your shots. Most heat exchangers do not have a shot timer, so this is a lovely touch by Profitec.

  •  The included wood accents on the portafilter handle, steam and hot water joysticks, and brew lever warm the machine up greatly and elevate the JUMP’s aesthetic. The fact that you don't have to hunt down aftermarket wood customers is a huge plus for us. The joysticks make steaming more intuitive and easy, and the dual-pressure gauge keeps the machine’s look clean and tidy. Even the new push button for the main power has a satisfying click and a subtle green glow.

The Profitec JUMP is a breath of fresh air in the 2k and under espresso machine space. It looks beautiful with its industrial callbacks to previous Profitec models and is warmed up by its walnut wood furniture. Added features like the 3-way temperature switch, programmable pre-infusion, shot timer, and optional flow control make this a machine for hardcore espresso drinkers, tinkerers, and beginner baristas. Our hats are off to Profitec for making a heat exchanger that is just such a pleasure to use. We cannot wait to pull more shots with the JUMP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Profitec JUMP and how does it differ from the Pro 400?

The Profitec JUMP is a modern heat exchanger espresso machine that replaces the Pro 400, offering automatic pre-infusion, a 3-way temperature switch, integrated shot timer, and walnut wood accents. It maintains the Pro 400's steam power while adding quality-of-life features for home baristas who want flexibility and style under $2,000.

Do I need to do a cooling flush with the Profitec JUMP?

Yes, like all heat exchanger machines, the JUMP requires a cooling flush before pulling espresso. Simply remove the portafilter and lift the brew lever for about four seconds to purge super-heated water from the heat exchanger tube. This ensures your brew water is at the correct temperature for extraction.

Can I adjust pre-infusion time on the Profitec JUMP?

The JUMP's automatic pre-infusion runs at a fixed interval and cannot be manually adjusted. However, you can add LUCCA E61 Flow Control for hands-on control over pre-infusion, infusion, and post-infusion phases. Clive Coffee will install the flow control device before shipping your machine.

What are the three temperature settings on the Profitec JUMP?

The JUMP's 3-way switch offers Position I (194-199°F) for dark roasts, Position II (199-204°F) for medium to light roasts, and Position III (204-208°F) for maximum steam pressure. This flexibility lets you tailor brew temperature to your coffee without needing a dual boiler PID system.

Is the Profitec JUMP good for milk-based drinks?

Absolutely. As a heat exchanger machine, the JUMP excels at steaming milk with café-quality steam pressure from its large steam boiler. The joystick controls make milk texturing intuitive, and the higher temperature setting (Position III) maximizes steam power for back-to-back lattes or cappuccinos.
