Weber Workshops Key Grinder Overview
Here at Clive HQ in Portland, OR, our showroom doubles as our espresso lab, where we test the latest and greatest coffee equipment and accessories to ensure that we stock the products that will elevate your espresso experience and improve the quality of your coffee. Today, we’re discussing the Weber Key conical burr grinder, which has achieved a level of cult status for home baristas over the last several years. We will determine what separates the Key from the other grinders in our lineup, what makes it unique, and who it’s for. We liked the Key so much that it looks like this one may be dropping into our grinder collection soon. Okay, so maybe we fell in love with the Key. Can you blame us?
Superior Design & Functionality
Simply put, the Weber Key has everything the espresso enthusiast desires—beauty and brawn. Right off the bat, you’ll surely notice the grinder's price tag, which is $2,139 USD. While the price is on the higher end, the functionality, grind quality and build quality more than justify the Key's cost.
- 83mm conical burrs—The Key is built around its massive 83mm conical burrs, which gives you the most even and consistent coffee particle size coupled with less heat and friction during the grinding process. The burrs are an exclusive partnership with Mazzer (a highly respected and renowned Italian grinder producer. Mazzer grinders are ubiquitous in cafés across the world). The Mazzer Robur burrs have a TiN coating (Titanium Nitride) which is wear-resistant and helps reduce friction on cutting surfaces.
- Pre-seasoning—Weber applies a proprietary pre-seasoning to the burrs, ensuring that the grinder will give you consistent results right out of the box. Usually, it takes up to 5 lbs of coffee to properly season a new burr set, but Weber takes care of that for you. Best of all, the coating is completely food safe, and the burrs should last you well over ten years in the home setting.
- Variable RPM—A salient feature. Controlling RPM allows you to reduce the amount of heat during the grinding process and get a more narrow distribution of coffee particle size. The dial is easy to use as you get feedback from the motor, lending a satisfying whir as you ramp the speed up and down. There has been a lot of research done on how heat impacts coffee during the grinding process, thus for many more delicate coffees, this feature is surely a boon for those chasing flavor.
- Magic Tumbler dosing system—The Magic Tumbler is a triple threat. It’s a dosing cup, distribution device, and dosing funnel all in one that magnetically attaches to the grinder. We found that no additional steps or tools were necessary before tamping. Even with high flow 1:1 ratios that normally would give us some channeling, we found that we got none at all.
- Unique grind adjustment collar—This is one of the most satisfying workflow features of the Key. To change your grind setting, lift up the collar and turn to your desired number. Each number represents a specific grind setting and each tick mark represents a 5-micron adjustment. The magnetic attachment clicking back into place sounds like a triumph once you reach that perfect grind setting. You will typically see stepped grind adjustments on budget-friendly grinders, where you chase the in-between settings on the dial without ever really getting there. With the Key, the grind adjustments are easy, accurate, and precise.
Who is the Weber Key For?
Given its high price point, the Key is not accessible to most home baristas, but a goal to aspire to or, as it’s often called on the forums: “end game.” The Key can be your first and last grinder or the final grinder in a series of previously loved grinders. I think the end game is the appropriate turn of phrase because the Key was built with long-term use and build quality in mind. The Key packs a ton of power and features like variable RPM, some of which were only available in enormous cafè grinders like the Mazzer Kony or the Macap grinders.
While we don’t currently carry the Key, we ultimately fell in love with it after days of testing and pulling hundreds of shots. The tactile feel of the grinder is incredible. No other grinder we've tested has the same satisfying feedback— from the catch of the magnetic Magic Tumbler to the hopper lid that comes off in two magnetic parts. It’s clear that the Key was built with you in mind, down to every single little satisfying and surprising detail. I am willing to put money on the person who seeks out the Key and is constantly looking to push the boundaries of what’s possible for home espresso. If you love espresso and you want the best equipment, consider the Key.
