Description

This is coffee with purpose behind every cup. The Rwanda Women's Coffee Extension at Mbizi Washing Station represents one of specialty coffee's most inspiring origin stories—700 female producers who've built a cooperative focused on education, empowerment, and exceptional coffee quality. Roasted by Brandywine Coffee Roasters, this natural process lot showcases what happens when agricultural expertise meets community investment: a creamy, fruit-forward profile that's as compelling as the hands that grew it.

Founded in 2017 by Aline Christine and Odette Uwamariya, the WCE has transformed both livelihoods and coffee quality in Rwanda's highlands. Their members have increased production from 3 to 4 kilograms per tree through improved agricultural practices, while the washing station doubled its output from 3 to 6 containers annually. This particular natural process lot—sun-dried Bourbon cherries from 1700 meters—expresses the full spectrum of Rwanda's terroir.

Tasting Notes

Expect vibrant raspberry and kiwi sweetness upfront, followed by a jammy, full-bodied mouthfeel that's characteristic of skillfully executed natural processing. The acidity is bright but balanced—think ripe stone fruit rather than citrus—with a lingering, syrupy finish that coats the palate. This is a fruit-forward coffee that doesn't sacrifice complexity for sweetness. The natural process amplifies the Bourbon varietal's inherent creaminess while the high elevation contributes clarity and definition to each flavor note.

Brew Methods

This coffee shines brightest in brewing methods that highlight its jammy body and fruit-forward character. Pour over methods like V60 or Kalita Wave will give you the cleanest expression of those raspberry and kiwi notes, especially at a 1:16 ratio with water just off boil. French press brings out the creamy body beautifully—try a 1:15 ratio and a four-minute steep. For espresso, this coffee pulls sweet and syrupy with moderate channeling forgiveness; aim for a 1:2 ratio in 28-30 seconds. The natural processing gives you flexibility with dial-in, though we'd avoid going too fine or you'll overextract the fruit sugars into muddiness.

About the Roaster

Brandywine Coffee Roasters sources coffees that tell stories of community impact and agricultural excellence. Their roasting approach lets origin character speak clearly while developing sweetness and body.

Beyond the exceptional cup quality, your purchase supports the WCE's ongoing programs: family planning services, nutrition education, livestock provision, and plans for Rain Forest certification that will increase premiums paid to producers.
