ECM is a company that built its reputation, almost entirely, on producing excellent E61 home espresso machines. Among Clive's vaunted lineup are some heavy hitters: the Synchronika II, the Technika VI, the Mechanika Slim PID, and the ECM Classika. They are the reason people say "ECM" and "E61" in the same breath. So, at first glance, the ECM Estetika might look like yet another. Take a closer look at the group head, and you'll immediately realize this machine is bringing something new to the table. As you can already tell, it's very easy to ramble on ad nauseam about ECM's virtues because they're just that exceptional.
The Estetika further blurs the line between the home and cafe spaces and what a machine should be capable of. Importantly, their renowned build quality and the tactile, approachable workflow that make ECM machines a joy to use remain central to delivering an exceptional user experience. The Estetika combines the kind of thermal precision and automation that most traditional E61 machines simply don't offer. The Estetika represents a fresh take on what a flagship home espresso machine can be—no, should be—and after a few weeks of putting it through its paces, we think ECM has earned the right to call it one.
The E61 company builds a new group head

Let's get the basics out of the way. The Estetika is a dual-boiler with a 0.5L brew boiler and a 2L steam boiler, both stainless steel, both PID-controlled. It has water versatility, runs on a quiet rotary pump, and can be plumbed into a hard water line or operated from its internal reservoir.
In place of a traditional E61 group head, the Estetika uses a proprietary, semi-saturated brew group that ECM developed in-house, with its own dedicated heating element sitting right alongside the brew boiler's. That's the foundation of what ECM calls Triple Temperature Control (3C Temp): the brew boiler, the steam boiler, and the group head are each managed independently by PID.
Ready to brew in about six minutes

Six minutes. From a cold start. Steam boiler included. This is a significant feat for a machine this big and this powerful. For context, a traditional E61 dual-boiler needs 30+ minutes to fully stabilize in temperature, and even then, some of ECM's own E61 machines with Fast Heat-Up mode are still within 10 minutes of reaching temperature before they're ready to pull shots. While most dual boilers on a standard 15-amp North American circuit heat one boiler at a time, the Estetika heats both boilers simultaneously.
Part of how ECM pulls this off is dead simple: the machine deliberately overshoots the boiler and group temperatures during warm-up, then prompts you to run a short flush to bring everything down to your set point. It's a solution so obvious to us now that we honestly wish this had been done 30 years ago. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that.
If you find that you can't wait the six minutes for the machine to heat up, fortunately, there's a convenient programmable on/off timer that lets you set two schedules per day, so in practice you'll rarely start from cold anyway. The machine can be ready to make your morning cappuccino before you're even out of bed.
Rock solid temperature stability

The second benefit of a dedicated group-head heating element is temperature stability. The 0.5L brew boiler is smaller than most machines in this class, and a reasonable concern is that one may struggle to keep up with a high volume of back-to-back shots. Have you heard of the La Marzocco Linea Mini? Yeah, the Linea Mini, which has a 0.17L brew boiler and can pump out drinks like no tomorrow.
To quell your worries, we tested pulling shot after shot after shot, and we could not get the Estetika's brew temperature to falter, no matter what kind of nightmare morning rush the Clive crew put it through. A small boiler recovers quickly and, coupled with a heated group head, is bulletproof.
Volumetric dosing

Let's put some respect on the Estetika's flagship feature outside of the group head—the volumetric dosing. The first thing you'll notice is the big glowing button at the top of the group. Set each button to the shot volume you want, and the machine stops itself when it hits your target espresso yield. The back-to-back consistency is incredible and only requires you to tweak your grind size now and again. There's no need to babysit your shot and fumble for the brew lever with a milk pitcher in your other hand. For the home barista, it's a massive convenience, especially if you pull several shots a day. The three buttons allow you to tailor each program to the coffee you're using, the brew ratio, or multiple users.
Steam power to match

When it comes to steaming milk, the Estetika delivers in spades, producing enough smooth, dry steam to get perfectly textured milk for any milk drink you can think of. Even with a larger 32oz pitcher, it doesn't run out of, well, steam.
The steam wand is double-walled and insulated, so you don't have to worry about burning yourself, and it articulates fully, allowing you to texture milk with ease. The joystick-style lever valves for steam and hot water are pulled straight from ECM's commercial lineup and, as always, deliver a satisfying, snappy experience. Flick, steam, flick, done.
Features galore

The OLED PID is tastefully flush with the front panel, right above the ECM logo, and is easy to read, but the best part is what you can program within it.
- Temperature control: Set the brew boiler, steam boiler, and group head temperatures individually, to the degree, in Fahrenheit or Celsius.
- Volumetric dosing: Three programmable buttons, each with its own saved shot volume.
- Active and passive pre-infusion: Active builds pressure gradually before full extraction. Passive soaks the puck and pauses before the pump kicks in. Both are adjustable.
- Shot timer and Shot Observer: Real-time extraction feedback across the machine's dual displays, so you can build a repeatable recipe instead of guessing.
- Scheduling and ECO mode: Two programmable on/off times per day, plus an ECO mode that saves energy when the machine sits idle.
- Housekeeping: A group head backflushing reminder (Clean Mode) and a filter-replacement reminder.
- Quality of life: Joystick steam and hot water valves, integrated Barista Lights, and a display you can switch off entirely if you want a cleaner face.
Water versatility
The rotary pump is surprisingly quiet, the quiet that makes a vibratory pump sound like a leaf blower in the next room by comparison, and it's adjustable, so brew pressure can be set where you want it, within reason, of course. Best of all, a rotary pump gives you more water versatility: plumb the Estetika directly into a water line using the included braided water hose, or run it from the 2.8L removable reservoir. Plenty of people start on the reservoir and plumb in later, and this machine makes that an easy afternoon project rather than a regret.
Either way, water filtration and softening aren't optional—they're the easiest preventive maintenance you can do for your espresso machine. Soft water in the 35–85 ppm range is what keeps a machine like this healthy for decades, not years, and it's the single cheapest insurance policy you can buy for your machine's internals.
Who is Estetika for?

The ECM Estetika is a showstopper of a machine, and that's no facade. Its matte black aesthetic, angular panels, and unmistakable group head tell you everything you need to know, and the espresso it produces backs it up.
If you've outgrown a single boiler or heat exchanger and want simultaneous brew-and-steam performance with the fastest, most stable temperature control ECM has ever put in a home machine, it's the right call. If you love the romance of an E61 but you're tired of waiting half an hour for it, it's the right call. And if you're making 6+ drinks on a Sunday morning, it's especially the right call, because the volumetric dosing and temperature stability that never wavers are exactly what your mornings are desperate for.
Final Thoughts

If you're a home barista who wants an unstoppable force of an espresso machine for just a single cappuccino, dinner parties, or to jumpstart your home espresso bar, the Estetika will have you covered and then some. Whether you want the most advanced machine ECM makes or simply the one that looks the part on your counter, the ECM Estetika is the machine for you.
