Why Your Espresso Machine Needs Soft, Filtered Water From the Start
Run filtered, soft water through your espresso machine every time — it's not optional. Scale from hard water is the number one cause of machine failure, and skipping soft water means repairs much sooner. If your machine is plumbable, install an inline Water Softening and Filtration System (or the Commercial version for very hard water) or a system for a coffee cart, office, or café. If it's reservoir-only, drop a BWT or Oscar softening pouch in the tank, or mix your own from distilled or RO water plus a Third Wave Water packet (never plain distilled — it's corrosive and makes flat espresso). Here's the rule that will save your espresso machine: you must run filtered, soft water through it every single time. Not sometimes, not "when you remember", always. Scale from hard water is the single biggest cause of espresso machine failure, and it's almost entirely preventable if you control the water entering your machine before it ever touches your boiler. The good news is that it's simple, whether or not you have an in-home filtration system. After you read this, you'll know exactly how to get soft, filtered water into your machine based on its setup, and why skipping this step means paying for repairs much sooner than you should.
The Core Answer: Soft, Filtered Water Is Not Optional

Scale is calcium and magnesium carbonate precipitating out of hard water and hardening onto the inside of your boiler and heating element. Left unchecked, it clogs passages, seizes valves, disrupts temperature stability, and eventually kills the machine; scale damage generally isn't covered under warranty. The fix is to feed your machine water that's both filtered (free of chlorine, sediment, and off-flavors) and soft (low in scale-forming minerals), with a total hardness between 35 and 85 ppm, as recommended by the Specialty Coffee Association.
How you achieve that depends on your machine. If it's plumbable, the cleanest answer is an in-home softening and filtration system on the water line. If it's reservoir-only, you treat the water in the tank with a softening pouch or mix your own from a distilled base. Either path gets you to the same place: soft, filtered water and a machine that lasts. What you cannot do is run untreated hard tap water and hope for the best. That's the fastest route to a scaled-up boiler and a repair bill.
One important caveat: don't run plain distilled or reverse-osmosis water with no minerals added either. It's corrosive, it can confuse the water-level probes in machines that sense water by conductivity, and it makes flat, lifeless espresso. You want the right minerals in the right amount, soft, not empty.
The Factors That Determine Your Approach
Plumbed or reservoir? This is the biggest fork. A plumbed-in machine like a LUCCA A53 Direct Plumb should have an inline softening and filtration system on the water line; that's the whole point of plumbing in cleanly. A reservoir machine lets you treat water right in the tank, which is even simpler.
Whether you actually know your water. Most people have no idea what's coming out of their tap. Water hardness test strips cost a few dollars and take ten seconds. Test before you commit to any approach, and, per our own guidance, keep testing periodically, even after you install a solution, to confirm you're staying within the 35 to 85 ppm window.
Your machine's boiler type and value. A single-boiler machine like the Profitec GO heats a smaller volume and is more forgiving if scale ever forms. A dual-boiler or heat-exchanger machine with a large brass or copper boiler, a LUCCA A53 Mini V2, or an ECM Synchronika II is far more expensive and more involved to service. Many manufacturers strongly discourage scaling of the boiler entirely. For those machines, prevention with soft water isn't optional maintenance. It's the whole game.
Temperature and usage. Machines with PID control hold hotter, more consistent boiler temps, and heat accelerates scale formation. This is no reason to skip PID; you want it for shot quality, but it does mean the water going in has to be clean and soft.

For plumbable machines: the Water Softening and Filtration System. This is our first recommendation for any machine you plumb in. It's an under-sink system that combines a softener with a 10-micron activated carbon filter, so it removes chlorine, sediment, and off-flavors, inhibits scale, and connects your cold water line straight to the machine's braided inlet. You can install it in line with a plumbed machine or under the sink to fill a pitcher for a tank machine. It's the highest-leverage purchase you can make for your machine's lifespan.
For very hard water or light-commercial use: the Commercial Water Softening and Filtration System. If your water is extremely hard, or you're setting up a coffee cart, office, or small café, the two-stage commercial system offers more robust softening and filtration, built for higher volume. This is the one to call us about if you're outside a normal home-water situation.
For reservoir-only machines: a BWT or Oscar softening pouch. If your machine runs off a tank, the simplest way to get soft water is to drop a softening pouch directly into the reservoir. The magnesium-based BWT pouch is our pick for flavor; the sodium-based Oscar is a more affordable option that runs slightly saltier. Either passively reduces hardness in the tank and gives yog real breathing room. For mix-your-own control: Third Wave Water packets. If you'd rather build water to a known target, start with distilled or RO water and add one packet per gallon. You get consistent, low-scale, good-tasting espresso water every time, ideal for reservoir machines where you control every fill. Never use the distilled base without added minerals.
Whichever route fits your machine, always keep a pack of test strips on hand. You can't manage scale you haven't measured.
What Most Guides Get Wrong
Most articles treat descaling as the solution to scale. It's Descaling, which is what you do after you've already failed to prevent scale, and on premium machines, it's the last thing you want to make a habit of. That's why we frame water as scale prevention rather than a descaling routine.
Here's the part generic advice skips: many high-end machines with brass or copper boilers should not be routinely descaled with acid, because descaling chemicals can attack fittings, gaskets, and the boiler itself over time. Manufacturers of machines in the ECM Synchronika and LUCCA A53 class generally tell you to prevent scale through water management, not to descale on a schedule. If you've bought a serious machine and your plan is "I'll just descale it once a year," you're slowly setting yourself up to damage a very expensive appliance. Soft water from day one means you may never need to descale at all.
The other misconception is that any filtered water is automatically soft enough. It isn't. A basic pitcher filter or fridge line reduces some hardness but leaves you at the mercy of your tap's baseline, which can still be well above the safe range. Filtration and softening are two different jobs, and your machine needs both. A proper softening-and-filtration system, or a softening pouch in the tank, does what a plain filter doesn't.
